Neurotic mum to pfb here - have v contented smiley 16.5 week old DS who grins at everyone and is often v amused by me. I think he's laughed twice but over a week ago now. When does it kick in properly? I'm working hard for it!!

DD1 at 9 weeks, DD2 at around 4 months. Bit like everything else really - all in their own time. Still have their early laughs recorded on my phone though. Very cute.

matana · 01/04/2011 20:13

DS laughs more regularly now at 18 weeks.

MrsSnaplegs · 01/04/2011 20:49

for the first time (proper enjoyment laughter at his older sisters antics ) - TODAY at 16+1 Grin forgotton how cute it is!

theotherhand · 01/04/2011 21:09

Should I be worried that it's not regular at nearly 17 weeks - and I've even begun doubting that I heard it all?

Any tips to get him laughing?

5 months (DS was a very serious baby..). One day, DH came home from work, walked in and said "hello" in a silly voice. DS just all of a sudden laughed his head off - it was lovely! He's now 2, and giggles away at all sorts of things, has a definite sense of humour, and shares jokes with me.

Don't worry, your LO will get there in his own time.

pinkthechaffinch · 02/04/2011 09:39

About 10 months, dd was a very serious baby, took a lot to get her to crack a smile. I even posted on MN about it.

She's 26 months now and full of fun.

Albrecht · 02/04/2011 09:43

Thing is they laugh at the weirdest stuff. ds loves it when we do pretend sneezes. Just keep experimenting.

theotherhand · 02/04/2011 11:54

Thanks all - thing is he smiles ALL the time; so I feel like he should laugh. But I'm being neurotic, I know. He'll get there.

Read an article a while ago that said they don't start to 'get' jokes till around 5 months, which is when they start giggling more. Don't know if that's any help.

Your DS sounds perfectly normal and happy. My DS still beams way more than he laughs, i just love his smile it melts my heart so thank god we see it so much!

LynetteScavo · 02/04/2011 19:22

5 weeks, but I think I was confused about how pregnant I was and he was very, very overdue.

MsScarlett · 02/04/2011 22:55

My DD is 12 weeks and definitely chuckles and squeals. BUT she only started smiling quite late at about 7-8weeks as she was downright miserable before due to reflux etc. I think it was because I laugh so loudly at her when she does smile because I love it so much, and she copies me! Also I have to confess when dp is at work I amuse myself by singing silly songs and dancing like a goon around her and she loves it. She will probably think I'm a dickhead when she gets a bit older though!

I shouldn't worry, if he is smiling he will be fine!

LakeFlyPie · 02/04/2011 22:59

Yesterday Grin
DS2 16 weeks ish.

Had forgotten how gorgeous it is.

DuelingFanjo · 02/04/2011 23:03

I got mine to laugh by getting my mum to bob up and down with me while I was holding him. so while she bobbed up, I bobbed down. he thought it was hilarious. he's 14 weeks.

LadyWord · 02/04/2011 23:10

It wasn't for ages with DD, several months at least, and we were worried because DS laughed all the time as a baby.

Although DD did eventually start to laugh, she still hardly ever does (aged 1) - but she smiles and gets excited and obviously enjoys things. I think some just laugh more than others. Also, when she laughs it's a faint chuckle whereas DS would belly laugh.

I know what you mean about working hard too. The amount of prancing around and silly faces I've done to be met with a slightly condescending smirk.

Lavitabellissima · 02/04/2011 23:15

My twins started laughing at about 12 weeks, they love it when you kiss their necks when getting ready for the bath.

Have to join MsScarlett in the dancing like a dickhead club, the best laugh I ever had, and had still not happened since, I started doing done 80's moves, Vivi laughed for about 5 minutes. I've tried since but it didn't work!

DuelingFanjo · 02/04/2011 23:39

wave to Lavita and snaplegs Grin

DH does the stupod dancing. DS loves it.

DuelingFanjo · 02/04/2011 23:39

oh - and my son also finds watching me hang out washing hilarious!

CardyMow · 03/04/2011 09:49

DS3 is 9weeks 6days. He first smiled at 4 weeks, and laughed 2 days later, and he laughs every time I say 'Are you a boooootiful boy' in a silly voice. He also laughs when DP 'wrinkles' his forehead.

He seems to have an evil sense of humour though - he puked on me just after I've got out of the bath, and when I asked him if he'd waited until I was clean - he was proper belly laughing! He laughed when he peed on DP during a nappy change, but that was due to DP's reaction.

MsScarlett · 03/04/2011 21:40

My dd laughs her head of when I go to change her nappy and she has done a massive stinky poo. She knows exactly what's she's done! Grin

Lighthouse115 · 03/04/2011 21:54

My little man started to laugh at around 4 months and for some reason, he thought pushing a soft toy off the table top was hilarious! It's so lovely when they start to really giggle. I am sure it won't be long:o

feministmama · 03/04/2011 22:07

My dd laughed properly at about 3-4 months. I was in the kitchen making dinner and heard an enormous chuckling baby laugh, turned round to find my foolish dh and foolish ds1 running up and down the hall - dh holding baby on ds's shoulders while they ran. So that's my top tip for getting a baby to laugh... older brothers. But seriously, don't worry - my first (the above mentioned ridiculous ds) was very solemn for a long time. Smiles were forthcoming, but perhaps he just didn't get our jokes...

PelvicFloorsOfSteel · 03/04/2011 23:00

DS1 - can't remember Blush

DS2 - today! 11 Weeks old but he's only done it once so far... I'm sure with DS1 as soon as he started he did it a lot, although that might just be what I think because I have a rubbish memory rather than how it actually happened.
