16 Weeks? Teething already?!

DD has been chomping on knuckles and dribbling for a few days. Last night, she howled in pain for a while, but seemed to be soothed by chomping on DH's knuckle so hard she left a bruise. Is there any chance that she could be teething already?

My DS started doing the chomping and dribbling at around the same time as your DD. Didn't see a tooth until 6 months, though - he was just a bad teether, he would fuss about 2 months before each and every tooth came out (I hardly noticed my DDs coming out, no trouble at all!).

16 weeks isn't too early at all. My 18 week old DS 'started' teething a few weeks ago and i still haven't seen a tooth appear. They start teething early, but the first one may not come through for a couple of months. Four months is, however, about the time babies properly find their hands too, and they make great play things at that age, so it may not necessarily be teething. Have her poos been more runny/ frequent, accompanied by nappy rash and flushed cheeks? These are all classic signs of teething.

my 17 week old has stareted teething too and is miserable, not much seems so help - am beginning to see the teeth too (i think) does the pain get better once the teeth start appearing or does this go on for long time??

Ds cut his first 2 teeth at 4 months. Started teething symptoms about a week before they came thru. Everyone said it'll be ages before they come thru... Q week later Hmm so yes they can be teething this early. Whether you'll see one or not is a different matter. Ds loved chomping on our hands too.

Rosedee · 27/03/2011 20:28

The pain eases off when the teeth have cut thru. Unless you're my ds who cut several teeth at a time.

thanks you - also is it normal to be so off their food? she's taking about half her normal bottle amounts, it's been going on for a week now??...

Rosedee · 28/03/2011 08:30

I would have thought so. Ds refused food when he was cutting some molars. If you think about it like this.. If you had toothache you wodnt really wanna eat cause it would hurt wouldn't it? Just keep offering milk and shell take what she wants. You could try teething powder or teething toy for her to bite on that's been in the fridge. When the tooth starts to cut thru teething gel might help.

Boy started classic teething symptoms at Christmas, he was 15 weeks old. the first two bottom teeth came through 2 weeks ago, at 26 weeks. The symptoms jut disappeared overnight.

Thanks all. We were v. worried until she calmed down and we could make an educated guess as to what was going on so I'm glad to hear we're probably right. No nappy rash, she's been lucky and never had it, but slightly runnier poos.

Got her some teething rings today though.

DS is 17 weeks and been like this for a couple of weeks now. He is dribbling like mad, has red cheeks and is off his milk. He keeps struggling at the bottle like he has wind too. I'm worried he is not taking enough milk. If he is anything like his sisters it will be months before a tooth actually comes through (dd1 at 10 months and dd2 at 14 months!!)

MrsGubbins · 28/03/2011 12:34

dd 17 weeks and going through the same, she means business when you give her a hand to chew on! I've used the Ashton and Parsons powders for the last 2 days and they seem to have helped, she was howling in pain yesterday, if only cuddles could cure it!

also seems to have a sideline in palm reading.. such concentration on her little face when confronted with a giant hand!

astra10 · 28/03/2011 19:17

thanks everyone, good to know what everyone else does this when this happens. i have amber necklace and Nelsons Teetha...and gel too as i can see the white beginnings of teeth - they help a little but not a huge amount. i am worried about her milk intake to but i guess she will eat when she's ready....
ethelina did your son have all pain from christmas until two weeks ago???!!! i really hope it doesn't last that long?
