No signs of rolling over

DD is now 4 months and has shown no sign whatsoever of trying to roll from back to front or front to back. At the beginning the whole 'tummy time' thing was a nightmare as she hated being on her front and would scream the place down. Now she is getting more comfortable on her front but still doesn't like being there for more than a few minutes.

I see some babies kicking around happy as anything on their fronts and flipping all over the place. Is it normal for her to have shown no interest in rolling?

I hope so because my four month old is the same! I think some babies just skip rolling and move onto sitting etc. I have a friend whose 7 month old still doesn't roll but can sit and move from sitting to crawling position.

Bunbaker · 26/03/2011 08:34

Four months is still very young. Please don't worry. DD didn't roll over until about 6 months.

JoinTheDots · 26/03/2011 10:26

My DD is just 7 months this week and rolled for the first time the other day. She has shown no signs of a repeat performance though! She is also now able to sit for short periods unaided.

4 months seems a bit young to me, but they are all different

I posted on MN when DD was 5 months as she had shown no sign of rolling - got plenty or reassurance there was nothing to worry about, and then she just did it at 7.5 months and hasn't stopped since!

Chundle · 26/03/2011 19:37

My DD got to 9 months and still wouldnt roll over! she then crawled, then walked and even now she still hates rolling over! so i wouldnt worry too much, x

MotherOfHobbit · 26/03/2011 20:06

My DS didn't roll over until almost 7 months, and then he seemed to decide that being mobile was where it's at and was crawling within a few weeks of rolling over for the first time.
I really wouldn't worry - they all do it at their own pace.

matana · 26/03/2011 20:12

Babies roll from front to back first. Back to front takes more time to master because it requires much more strength and uses more of their muscles. My DS is 18 weeks and has only just started rolling from front to back during tummy time. He did it accidentally first and we praised him. He then had a few days when he couldn't do it again. Today is the first day he knows what he's doing and does it on purpose more or less every time. Two weeks ago i worried he'd never do it!

Your DD will start to do it soon. You'll know it's around the corner when she starts 'crowd surfing' during tummy time. He arms and legs will go up in the air and she'll balance like a see-saw on her tummy.

mylovelymonster · 26/03/2011 20:21

Tummy time was traumatic for our two (and for me also. we all just hated it). They both started to roll somewhere between 5-7 months. First one used to roll over and not be able to get back again so got very upset. Second one found it a great larf. First one never sat up but went straight to crawling. HVs were most concerned Smile Both happy healthy monsters.

Please try not to compare and get worried unduly!

DancingThroughLife · 26/03/2011 20:25

DD showed absolutely no signs of rolling until nearly 7 months, at which point she rolled from front to back, then back to front, then crawled within 2 weeks. 3 months later, she hasn't got any new moving skills.

Definitely don't compare, and don't worry. They do everything entirely at their own pace. And 4 months is still very young Smile

sunndydays · 27/03/2011 19:40

Dd is nine months and doesn't roll...she nearly got there once but hasn't really tried since! She is an observer rather than a doer though Grin

MavisEnderby · 27/03/2011 19:42

4 months is very early.I think both mine were nearer a year. Please don't worry:)

ZacknJakesMuma · 27/03/2011 19:50

Both of mine hated the dreaded 'Tummy Time'. I remember the dragon of a health visitor at baby clinic looking at me and DS1 as if we were total failures as he lay face down and screaming at the postnatal group... Needless to say we didn't go back! Both my sons rolled over at around 6 months ish but made absolutely no attempt to crawl until around 9.5 months or so when they both crawled and pulled themselves up simultaneously. Both were then walking by a year (21 months between them). Your little one will get there in her own time :)

Iggly · 27/03/2011 20:11

I used to do tummy time with DS on my chest and I was lying back. I also put him on his tummy on the bed and would kneel so we were at eye level. Much better for him!

I did read somewhere (I think!) that either being in a sling a lot or being carried a huge amount helped strengthen a baby's neck muscles - which help with tummy time and rolling. Can't remember which.

Also give them time for a feed to go down before trying tummy time. Before bath time was always popular!

monkoray · 27/03/2011 20:12

my DS rolled back to front at about 6 months but never learned to roll front to back - i guess at some point he must have mastered it because sometimes he's on his front in his cot and sometimes on his back now at 17 months, but it certainly didn't happen at the time you are looking for it, and didn't happen before he learnt to sit up and to crawl (8 months).

daisystone · 28/03/2011 09:11

There is a massive variation in when they do it! Of the boy and girl babies I know, it seems that the boys are doing it much earlier.

DS2 is 4 months old and showing absolutley no signs of rolling over and he really dislikes being on his tummy. He likes to be carried around and loves being upright.

DS1 rolled over at about 6 months and DD never rolled over as a baby - she's 10 years old now and it doesn't seem to have caused her any problems Grin

I've learned not to compare my DC's development to other children a they all reach their milestones in their own time. I'm actually hoping that DS2 doesn't start moving too quickly as if he's anything like DS1 he'll turn into a little demolition expert once he's on the go! Grin

lurcherlover · 28/03/2011 23:30

DS is 5 months and showing no interest at all in rolling over...I see other babies his age who are really "squirmy" when on the floor and get worried when mine just seems happy lying there...so this thread is reassuring Smile

Woodlands · 29/03/2011 15:02

My 8 month old DS doesn't roll over, this thread has been quite reassuring!

hartley123 · 29/03/2011 15:02

my boy is a little over 4months and has als not rolled over, loves being carried and can nearly sit up. the bumbo he has has really helped strengthen his back and neck muscles for short 5/10 min periods. he has tummy time to help to but nothing happened i think 4months is still very early for roll over!

ethelina · 29/03/2011 15:04

hehe I posted this exact thing on MN when my son was 5 months old. Got some reassuring answers and lo, within about 3 days the little bugger did it! I'm sure he just wanted to get me all worked up.

fifitot · 29/03/2011 19:07

My nearly 9m old doesn't roll either. However he hates tummy time so probably hasn't had enough of this to encourage him. He sits up well though.

therethere · 29/03/2011 20:56

My 9 month old doesn't roll over either!

greensnail · 29/03/2011 21:30

My 10 month old doesn't roll over, and DD1 didn't do until about 10 months either, doesn't seem to affect her at all now!

MammyT · 30/03/2011 21:33

My now 4 year old NEVER rolled, crawled at about 9/10 months, walked at 12 months and hasn't stopped running since!

My other child rolled at exactly 4 months :)
