My granddaughter (5 weeks) cries and screams for hours at a time. My daughter read on here about Colief helping so asked her doc to ket her try it. He refused, saying it was for lactose intolerant babies only. Is that what other mums found? We didnt get that impression here.

You can buy Colief over the counter if you're in the UK so no need for the Dr to say yay or nay.

What else has your daughter tried? Is it definitely colic? Was the baby fairly content up until a couple of weeks ago? Is this your daughter's first baby?

Doc said it had to be on prescription. Odd.

No it's definitely available over the counter - i bought some from Boots. It's expensive - a tenner for a really tiny bottle - so if you can get it on prescription you'll save money. It's a bit of a faff to administer if breasfeeding, but i hear loads of people with colicky babies singing its praises. As nobody knows exactly what causes colic (it could well be a slight lactose intolerance) your doctor is talking crap. Colief contains an enzyme that helps break down lactose more effectively, which some babies struggle with due to the immaturity of their tiny tummies (which is why they tend to grow out of colic around 12 weeks or so). There is a belief that this is the cause of colic and many people would agree, given that Colief seems so effective for many.

You could also try Infacol or Gripe Water, they're cheaper but might not be as effective.

Yep, colief, infacol and gripe water all available over the counter. Some Dr's will do them on prescription, but I think it only tends to be if they are diagnosed with a particular condition rather than it "just" being colic.

Has your daughter got a sling? We found carrying baby upright in her stretchy wrap really helped her settle in the early evening when her colic was at its worst.

Unfortunately my DS was 4.5 months old before I discovered colief. Took a good few days to work but the difference in him was unbelievable! Definitely recommend it.

My GP also dismissed my concerns about lactose intolerance but even now at 2 he suffers with certain cheeses and yoghurts.

Just trust your instinct and anythings worth a try

Have a go at cranial osteopathy. Sounds (and looks ) like a rip-off but a complete life saver for me. The best £40 I ever spent.

Colief definately helped us DS is now 13 weeks really made a difference to the amount of crying, wish I'd heard about it sooner!!

Is she breastfeeding? She might need to feed, feed, feed feed etc. Just a thought
