11 M/O refuses to stay still during nappy change

My 11 m/o son has been 'asserting his independence' for the past couple of months, straightening & stiffening his body to stop anyone putting him into his buggy/car seat/clothes if he doesn't want to do it and screaming as soon as he's put into his highchair if there's no food in his mouth immediately (heaven forbid we should attempt to wash his hands or put on a bib!)
These are all things we are trying to ignore but in the past couple of weeks he has started to get worse with moving during nappy change time. As soon as he is laid down to be changed he starts to whinge and tries to turn over and crawl away. Its getting difficult to try and pin him down and change him one handed. I have tried giving him a muslin cloth to play peekaboo with, singing to him or giving him toys so he can be distracted but they only seem to work for the first minute or so, then we're back to the squirming. He wails throughout, then as soon as he can sit up he's fine so I know its just the laying down he doesn't want to do.
Any ideas for what else we can try?

Mine was the same (actually, still is at 17 months). Nothing like a pooey bottom trying to crawl away from you. :o

He loves books, so we have a supply of small ones that we give him during changes. It's like he's reading on the toilet, quite gross really, but often effective. We also put a nice mobile up above the changing table that spins around.

Some days nothing works though. Then it's just a firm hand on his tummy and a big NO. That's about all you can do I think.

www.rabbitts.com/

Have used this with DS1 and DS2. It is fab!

I have the same problem with my ds, in fact I started a thread about it earlier tonight :o

I think my ds may end up looking like a turtle with that mat strapped to him Louplet! We always have the changing mat on the floor and it doesn't look like there's anything to keep that mat down, does really work that well?

Try giving him a sticker or a piece of sticky tape. It takes them a while to figure how to get unstuck Grin

Also learn how to perfect the art of changing them on a mat on the floor with one of your legs over their tummy (sit sideways on to them). Master the art of the 10 second nappy change! Grin

Have just posted on ShinyMoon's thread Smile

Ours also does the stiff body and screaming! How lovely to be amongst friends.

With the highchair we put the bib on while he's still crawling around and the food on his tray before he's in. Usually means he gets a foot in his food or is grabbing stuff before he's sat down.

With the changing, I often let him crawl around for a bit and try and wrap it around him. Not ideal but sometimes its better than the screaming.
