11 M/O refusing to stay still at nappy change

My 11 m/o son has been 'asserting his independence' for the past couple of months, straightening & stiffening his body to stop anyone putting him into his buggy/car seat/clothes if he doesn't want to do it and screaming as soon as he's put into his highchair if there's no food in his mouth immediately (heaven forbid we should attempt to wash his hands or put on a bib!)
These are all things we are trying to ignore but in the past couple of weeks he has started to get worse with moving during nappy change time. As soon as he is laid down to be changed he starts to whinge and tries to turn over and crawl away. Its getting difficult to try and pin him down and change him one handed. I have tried giving him a muslin cloth to play peekaboo with, singing to him or giving him toys so he can be distracted but they only seem to work for the first minute or so, then we're back to the squirming. He wails throughout, then as soon as he can sit up he's fine so I know its just the laying down he doesn't want to do.
Any ideas for what else we can try?

I switched to pull ups for a while - easier to put on one handed while you use the other to pin baby down or hang onto a leg.

Yep, it's a nightmare isn't it. I sometimes have to trap DD with my legs to do her nappy, to stop her rolling over. Don't like doing it. The only thing that works, and only for a few seconds, is a new and very fascinating object, but it's hard to think of a new one each time. Panti-liner, lipstick, hairbrush etc.
Will watch thread.

I would change his nappy while he was standing up, a book or toy should distract him long enough.

ginmakesitallok · 23/03/2011 22:01

Pull-ups are your answer. Like Beamur I swapped to them - much much easier

tabbycat7 · 23/03/2011 22:07

I change ds3 standing up, pullups and I give him the zapper to play with if he's being really awkward. If he's resisting the buggy, tickling makes him bend and at mealtimes I give him a breadstick or a cracker, then put him in his chair : -)

Thank you so much for all your suggestions. Have had some success with standing up changes now, although he seems to want to sit down as soon as the nappy has been removed so have been doing poo changes with him face down over my lap to avoid pooey carpet issues! It is much easier to pin him down over my lap and he seems more easily distractable when I then put a toy right in front of his nose so, so far so good :)

Ah, I remember this well. I would lie him down on floor, sitting down myself and then pin his legs down with my legs, using my hands to do the cleaning bit. Lots of yelling. (Often from both of us). Took a while, but he got over it.

by 11 m/o does the same thing...he SCREAMS his head off if you lie him down to change his nappy. i bought pull ups but he's not heavy enough. i also tried the standing up thing and had the pooey carpet syndrome. vanish carpet foam at the ready.

will keep my beedies on this thread

MotherOfHobbit · 26/03/2011 20:11

Oh, my 10mo does the same thing. He screams his head off when I lie him down for a change and twists his body. Will definitely have a go at the 'changing on your lap' tip.
Anyone know how long this phase can last? Please don't tell me it's years.

MerryMarigold · 26/03/2011 20:12

Comes and goes. Ds2 going through it again, but he's 2.5 (I think ds1 did this too) and I think ready to potty train, so hopefully not for much longer.
