Child aggression at school

My son is very physically aggressive towards children and adults at his school. He is 4.5 years old, and has attended the school since he was 3.5, starting in the Nursery class. He does not display the same behaviour at home or in other settings. He has been given an Individual Education Plan (IEP), a CAF referral, and has been observed by a Special Needs Co-ordinator, and most recently a Health Visitor. Consensus of opinion is that he does not have any ?Special Needs? or ?Disorders?. But, we have been told that we have to attend NHS counselling clinics with him or he will be placed under the care of the Child Protection Unit. We have not subjected him to any particular acts of aggression or temper, and he appears to be very well adjusted. Does anyone have any similar experiences or advice/comments on this?

I tthis was happening to my family, I would question how they can make you go to the NHS counselling sessions and then place him under the care of the CP Unit. For all they know, you could privately have him assessed by a child phsychiatrist and have private sessions.

I would be extremely worried that they are threatening that if you do not attend the NHS clinics.

Obviously it could help him but perhaps you could get some advice as to why they are saying about the Child Protection Unit if you don't go.
Surely they can advise you to take him to the sessions - but making you go???

Lots of children go through agressive stages, especially whilst in reception - it's a huge change from preschool. And at 4.5, you are quite within your right to take him out of school until after his 5th birthday as he doesn't have to be in full time ed until then anyway.

RBunny has your child seen a child psychologist or a developmental pediatrician? A HV, SENCO or teacher CAN NOT diagnose any disorders or behavioral conditions.

I agree madamesin - it does seem a bit strange the route they've taken?
