Not very sociable, lacking imagination

My son is 3 and is an only child. Very few of my friends have children and he is the only grandchild on both sides of our family. Therefore he is used to adult company and getting everything his way! He seems very shy but since going to nursery 4 days a week, he has opened up a little although it took quite a while until he felt comfortable to speak at nursery. He's very good at puzzles, construction type of toys and enjoys playing games like hungry hippos but i seem to notice that he lacks imagination. He does come up with the odd thing which indicates he uses he's imagination but at nursery where the other children play with each other, chat and role-play, he doesn't play role-playing games with others. Is this normal? Is there anything we can do to help him? Anyone else experienced similar and the children have grown out of it? Would love to hear from you.

Oh, i forgot to mention that sometimes he seems to know what's real and what's pretending. He asked me for Buzzlightyear outfit for his birthday so he can fly and he said he doesn't want the pretend one, he wants the real one so he can fly!

My dd was similar sh used to dress up but just used to put the clothes on walk around for a bit and take them off again she never actually 'pretended' to be anything in them. She aske for babies and sylvanian families cos her mates had them but never really played with them like other kids do. She much preferred games (but always ha to win) and Lego and things like that. No amount of encouraging would help. She's very hyperactive and has just ha a diagnosis of ADHD with possible aspergers as well. I think you have to go with what they like to do and what they are good at to build their self esteem

That was me as a child. One of my early school reports said i lacked imagination. Rubbish...I did tonnes of day dreaming, I just never shared it with anyone!
