'Potty training'

I just wanted to ask a question after reading a few of the threads on this part of the site.

How old is/are your child/children when you 'potty train'?

I ask because I've read a few threads where the children are between 2 and 3 and there are some problems (I won't mention any).

All of my 6 children were out of day and night nappies before they were 2 (now aged between 21 and 6). And I didn't potty train (didn't even have a potty). In fact, I'm not really sure how I did it Blush. My friend has guardianship of her grandson and hasn't done this in a while and was asking if I remembered how I went about it. I felt a bit 'hippy mum' saying what I did because I didn't really consciously 'do' very much I don't think.

Btw her grandson will be 2 in June and she was beginning to think it was about time she 'did something'. So, should she?

Depends on a child...There's a whole section about potty training here on mumsnet
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/potty_training
not sure if link is working but very easy to find on Topics list
loads of useful info there.Good luck for your friend!

The average age children are potty trained now is around 2-3 years - this is later than about 30 years ago when most toddlers wore terry nappies
I would not worry about stating toilet training formally yet but there is no reason why she cannot start to introduce the idea of sitting on the potty/toilet. We suggest the time to start formally, regardless of age, is when
the child can stay dry for about 2 hours
will happily sit on the potty/toilet
will follow basic commands
has some understanding on what wees/poos are
At this stage removing the nappy certainly seems to speed up the process!

Thanks.

I did say to her I remembered leaving their nappies off and letting them run around in the garden during the summer and it's definitely easier with laminate flooring, but I was stumped with anything else and felt a bit useless!

He doesn't really make any fuss if he's wet or dirty so maybe not quite ready although he does understand basic commands.

The best I could give her was 'well how many 5 year olds do you see starting school in nappies?' and I didn't think that was particularly helpful Smile

Callmemamma I'll have a look around that section - must've missed it. Then I can seem all knowledgeable and wise....ahem.
