Spitting

DS2 is almost 2 and from the age of about 18 months his way of showing displeasure is by spitting. It's not a horrendous big gobbet of spit that flies miles, he can't spit like that. It's more of a spitting noise and saliva runs down his chin.

He does the same thing every time. I tell him not to do something, or tell him he can't have something, then he will stand stock still, drop his head to his chest for a while, then he'll lift his head back up and 'spit'.

I can't say it's particularly unpleasant, but it will be if he doesn't grow out of it soon!

Does anyone else's DC do this? How did you get them to stop? I've tried (pointless) time out and a stern 'We don't do that, it's not nice'...but obviously at 2 it's all a little over his head.

I don't think timeout is pointless, I would do it and be very clear.

The only other method would be to offer an alternative.....I'm not sure what though...

DS is 4.5 and currently going through a phase of doing it. I'm not sure what to do for the best, ignore or severe telling off. Neither have cracked it so far Confused. I think he knows I hate it.

Thanks for your replies. Timeout for my DS is pretty pointless because he seems to enjoy it!!

Hmm, he had a spit fest today, the more I tell him off, the more he does it.

That's probably your answer then. My dd (4) has started doing this recently and I tell her that if she wants to spit can she go away from me as I don't want to see it or just move/look away from her. She's older, obviously, but withdrawal of attention may be your friend.

Bloody gross, isn't it?

My DSS 2.5 does this, im not sure why as it is very random and at anytime! it is Gross and I never accepted this with my DS who is now 6, My DSS will have time out for two mins with no exception, he sometimes giggles when we do this but that is just a way of getting attention, I think if you explain to them why they need to have time out and then walk away from them, ignoring any crying, shouting, giggling, it will get better, you just need to persevere (I know that can be difficult when your child is showing signs of not caring but keep going!

Hope it gets better soon
