I cut down very gradually, giving shorter and shorter feeds until stopped at about 18 months. Gave a mixture of banana porridge, cream and milk just before bed and that seemed to satisfy her.

With my second child, I stopped at 16 months; she was a chubby, bouncing baby and I was the skinniest I've ever been in my life, and not in a good way! I had to go away for business for 2 nights; when I got back it turned out that she had managed ABSOLUTELY FINE without mummy milk! This led me to conclude that her NEED for it had become more of a WANT and I'm glad that I stopped then. If you are CLEAR about a firm NO, then it is easier for her to understand. You really sound like you want to stop NOW! 16 months is a brilliant amount of time to breastfeed. You can reduce feeds slowly, but mine didn't suffer from the overnight stopping much... however, do be prepared for your DS to still be a bit 'nipple-obsessed' for a while! With my DD, this was gradually replaced at about age 2 with a poo and wee obsession!!! All perfectly normal! (Oral stage to Anal stage)

Google Dr Jay Gordon's night weaning method. I did it at 14 months and it worked well. Once I'd knocked the frequent night feeds on the head, I felt less stressed about carrying on with 2-3 feeds a day.

I night weaned at 9 months. I was totally exhausted and had lost a lot of weight. Did controlled crying for 3 nights and he got the message. If he'd woken and asked for breast I'd have offered him water, but he didn't - he just slept straight through - so I concluded that he didn't need it, just was in the habit of waking and getting it.

As for during the day I upped his calorie intake gradually and only offered breast morning and night by the time we got to a year. He kept on with those two feeds until about 18 mos, then dropped the morning one of his own accord and I finally stopped at 21 months.

Basically, there's a bit of give and take, but you shouldn't be doing all the giving and he all the taking! If you want to cut him down then decide to drop one feed at a time and make sure you exchange it for something else that he'll like.
