When do babies start dreaming?

DS2, nearly 11 months, is crying and whimpering in an odd way that I have never heard before. I went up to check thinking he must be ill (been sick), or hungry (he is a regularly night feeder still), but he is fast asleep, no apparent fever or vomit in the cot. It seems to be coming and going, so he will cry for a minute or two, and is turning his head side to side, but eyes closed, body relaxed. Then he stops for a couple of minutes before starting up again. Could he be dreaming already? I don't remember DS1 ever doing this until night terrors kicked in at about 2.5 Sad

They dream from birth, ds is 12wks and dreams and has always done so, what about I'm not sure but he laughs and frowns, smiles and twitches all in his sleep. I don't think night terrors start until later, dd (5) didn't have nightmares until she was 2.

My dd (now 3) has been doing something v similar on the odd occasion for as long as I can remember, defo at 11m, and probably earlier...

Ok, so it probably is a 'bad dream' then. It just freaked me out a little bit, as I have never heard the type of cries he was making before. He seems to have settle now, so it didn't last long.

DS1 definitely had full on terrors, most nights for about 4-6 months when he was around 2.5. Now, at 5.5, he uses the excuse of any sort of vivid dream to try to get into bed with us.
