DS (6yo) nearly choked on food at school, now is scared when eating!

Not sure if I've posted in the right place but here goes!
My DS (6yo) always has school dinners. Last week he came home and told me he got some food stuck in his throat (pasta) and since then it is now taking him ages to eat anything.
He puts food in his mouth but chews, for what feels like an eternity, then finally swallows it but then takes a sharp intake of breath so it seems it has frightened him to eat alot of solid food.
I do not want this to become a huge problem for him so what can I do to help him? We have talked to him about it and said to drink water to help wash it down. Should I be telling the school as well?
Thanks

Shame - he must have got such a fright.
I think all you can do is explain that he needs to take it slow, have small bites, chew his food carefully (which he has obviously cottoned onto!) and try not to talk or laugh while eating.

Also tell him it's not uncommon, it happens to lots and lots of people. And we just have to learn to take it slow.

I would mention it to the school so that they don't try get him to rush through lunch as I think that would make it difficult for him to get over it.

I think he has just had a nasty fright & if you ignore the new behaiour he will soon start eating normally again.

I would have a quiet word with the school & ask that he is not fussed over whilst eating.

Poor little thing must have been really scared.
