When did you put away babyish things?

I live overseas and don't know many other parents with similar age children (DS is 21 months). Just curious really about when people stopped using all the various baby paraphernalia and moved on.

When did you:

Move DC from cot to bed? We're thinking about doing this around the 24 month mark. Does this sound about right?
Stop using high chair and bib? DS still happy in his high chair and still a fairly messy eater, so not sure when we're going to give this up!
Wind down using the buggy and make DC walk? We live in a city and don't drive. I'm trying to encourage DS to walk more We just about manage the 200m journey to our local supermarket, but longer distances are fairly painful and usually end up with DS demanding to be carried (although he's very energetic and runs around for ages in the local park!).
Throw away nappies (during the day)? I know this is probably an entire other thread. Thinking about giving this a go over the summer once DS turns 2...

Cot to bed- ds was 2 in December and we still haven't done that yet. We figured we may aswell leave it as long as possible to avoid all the drama and bedroom trashing! Grin

Stop using highchair and bib- We did this when he turned 2. He just sits on a booster chair now with no straps and has an apron.

Making dc walk- At the moment we take the buggy out for longer walks but try to encourage ds to walk as much as he can until he gets tired.Except when I'm looking round the shops, because thats a nightmare withou the buggy!

Still haven't potty trained yet. Ds has a potty which he uses when he wants to but I don't think he's ready for pants yet.
Hope that helped a little but toddlers are all different. Try to concentrate on doing things when your ds is ready rather than to an age timetable Grin

Will definitely take the lead from DS on al this. Just interesting to know roughly when other people are making these changes so that I don't end up completely out of step and with a 5 year old bib-wearer Grin

Also keen to avoid the drama and bedroom trashing that is likely to go with the move to a big bed, so may leave that one a little later.

Love the apron idea (although the plastic pelican bib we use at the moment is very efficient!).

We kept DCs in their cot as long as possible, tbh - both were close to 3. They'd made no attempt at climbing out until this age and so made the changeover then for safety reasons.

Bibs stopped at around 2 (although I sometimes wish we still had them!!) & as we have the Tripp Trapp chairs, they both still use them, but with the front bar taken off. We started doing this at about 2 and were lucky in that they both stay put and don't go wandering.

Stopped using buggy when walking wasn't a problem. We've always lived fairly rurally and have a dog, so walks would start in the buggy and then they'd walk for the last 500 metres or so & this would gradually increase until they could manage it all. I think buggys are useful when shopping or in town though.

DC1 was dry during the day at around 2.10 & DC2 at 3. I hadn't bothered trying before then & both managed in about a week with no regression since.

But I would say that there are no set rules on when to do any of these things as they are dictated purely by your DC. They're also nothing to worry about, so just let your DS lead you. Good luck!!

Does depend on the child - and other circumstance - eg other child etc
Move DC from cot to bed? my DS1 was about 24 months - we waited until he could climb out of his cot -I wouldn't do it before as some children then get out of bed all the time - at least my DS1 did
Stop using high chair and bib? we went to a booster seat on a normal chair about 24 months just so I could get the high chair out of the house - not sure when he stopped using a bib 21/2?
Wind down using the buggy and make DC walk? my DS1 sometimes used the buggy at nearly 4 -he could walk quite along way just didn't enjoy it -especaily if we were going round shops- he would go long disntances on his balance bike from about 27 months or so
Throw away nappies (during the day)? I know this is probably an entire other thread.
Potty training entirly depends on child -I would wait until they should some signs of being ready though - I liked no cry potty training solutions which had a readiness questionaire

Cot to bed - about 2 (second child due first time; dd2 climbing out second time). No need to do it unless your ds is climbing out.

High chair - can't remember, but she was getting too big to get in and out easily.

Buggy - dd2 is 4 and we no longer use it, but we were still using it occasionally just before she turned four (on school run, when she was v tired etc - I don't drive so my kids have to walk longish distances)

Potty training - just before 3 with dd1, about 2.5 with dd2.

Cot to bed - shortly before 3. Though it was really just taking the sides off the cotbed and replacing with a bedrail which is still there (DS is 3.5). He never climbed out, and even now he stays in bed until you go to get him.

Highchair - about 18months. It took up loads of room! Replaced with a booster seat on a dining chair and we're just about to do away with this as DS can't get his legs under the dining table.

Bib - around 2 but it depended on what he was eating ie didn't bother for sandwiches, but definitely did for spag bol!

Stopped using the buggy - about 3 but this is because we moved house and no longer needed it as we have to get the bus everywhere.

Potty training - just around his 3rd birthday. He wasn't ready before then and I actually think we could have waited a bit longer. It ended up being a relatively painless experience and we've just stopped using nappies at night too.

All of these things depend on your child's personality and your circumstances. There's no right or wrong age.

candleshoe · 10/03/2011 20:43

cot to bed - age 2.8
high chair - aged 2.10 bib - aged 3.5
buggy - aged 3 ish unless for a really long day out.
nappies - aged 2.10 with DTSs and age 2.4 for DD

Firawla · 10/03/2011 21:47

I would take the dc's lead on these things whether or not they seem ready, 21 months is still quite young so if he needs any of these a while longer I wouldn't see the harm. It may just make life harder if you try to go without all these before he is ready?

but for my 2 yr old:

he was out of cot about 20 months because he learned to climb over the sides, so had no choice

high chair until around 2 yrs possibly couple of months more, bib went before that though cant remember when

buggy, still use it now 50% and walking the other 50% and he is 2.8 years old. but have it anyway as its a double, otherwise may have done without it earlier but tbh it makes life easier if you are in a rush to put them in cos they can be slow walker. if he can only walk 200m would keep it a bit longer as you wont get very far then. keep practising him walking further and further to build him up a bit

nappies i think depends on when they are ready but why not give it a try over the summer, you never know it may go okay. mine still in them most of the time, he is ready really but i've not pushed it enough
