DS 2.1 pronunciation

hi there,

DS is 2.1yo and has been slow with his talking so far. Recently he has been trying out new words but most of them are not pronounced correctly. he says daddy, ball, cat, car, ta, no, uhoh, nose correctly but most things are incorrect

Examples -

Dus = bus
Dye dye = bye bye
Sheet = sheep and same word for shape
Chuck = truck
Goggy = doggy
Guggy = buggy
Cewka = cooker
Cut = cup
Tlease = please
Schuch = stuck

etc!

I know toddlers pronounce some words incorrectly but this is most of his words. The HV wants to reassess him in 8 weeks to see if he should be referred to SALT. i wonder if it's his hearing though. Any advice/experience?

he also doesn't put many words together. he will say 'get it', 'kick it', 'oh no' but that's about it.

I am worried, but not sure how worried I should be!

He's only just 2 - really not time to stress. When he sees a bus and says "dus" just say "yes that is a BUS".

DD has just turned 3 and is very good with her speach but cannot say "blue". She called it "new" for ages and now it's moved onto "Boo". She still says Pweeeese and not please. Nursey, pre school and my cm (yes she now goes to all 3 - only for one term then will just be at nursey, long story) are all telling me dd is extremely bright and way ahead of others her age, despite these pronounciation issues. Once ds realises he can communicate and how easy it is, he will focus more on getting the sounds more acurate.

Is everything else okay - movement etc? They can't excel at everything.

Boysarelikedogs - thank you for the link, that is reassuring. Btw, i love your username.

PrincessScumpy - yes he is fine physically, will run, jump, throw and kick a ball. Attempts to catch. Draws circles. thanks for the advice :)

That link is really interesting, BoysAreLikeDogs. I also like your username, but it reminds me of the time I felt like running away from my first teaching practice when a very jaded teacher told me 'Children are like horses. They NEED to be broken' (please be assured I never followed her 'helpful' advice!).

I've made a list of all of the words that DS says kinda regularly. he has 90 words, of which just under 50% are said clearly/pronounced correctly. I'm not overly worried based on what I have read here, but in 8 wks when he is to be reviewed, I will ask the HV to refer him for a hearing test 1st.

At that age ds was hardly talking at all.

He is now 7 and speaks beautifully with excellent diction except th which we are working on (its useful having a dh who is a voice coach at times)
