...so, now he is gaining weight well, I've found something new to be worried about. Is it normal that we don't usually have eye contat during feeds? MW seemed to think it odd... Of course, now I'm paranoid about ASD

More likely as his sight improves, he is finding more interesting stuff to look at! Mum, yeah, seen her, what next?

lecce · 04/03/2011 19:31

I was exactly the same as you, books went on about the amazing bonding that should be happening but ds1's eyes would dart around madly for a bit then he'd fall asleep!

He's now 4 and a very affectionate, loving boy. There is certainly nothing wrong with our bond. He is very outgoing though and also never showed any signs of separation anxiety at any point, which worried me for a while! Now I realise that it was a good thing and can't believe I was silly enough to worry that, er, my ds was happy Hmm but paranoia and parenting go hand-in-hand for me.

ds never looked at me either when feeding, when he was little. Sometimes does now he is 8 months.

Bonding my arse. I worried about it too.

spidookly · 04/03/2011 19:42

Neither of my dds did that. This is the first I've ever heard of it being a problem.

Depending on hold, breast size etc I imagine it's not always even possible.

What a daft midwife to worry you about something so silly.

Thanks all. I heart MN. Will drop this and look for the next reason to be paranoid...

i don't think my ds did this till later 5-6 months. its probably to do with eye sight focusing or position

littlebylittle · 04/03/2011 21:33

No, my dd never made eye contact when feeding either. My body shape just made it impossible. No problems to report five years on.

PenguinArmy · 05/03/2011 05:51

tbh when DD does look at me now, it freaks me out, she has a certain look in her eye.

Panzee · 05/03/2011 06:13

Babies that age don't even realise they are a separate being to you.

medoitmama · 05/03/2011 08:21

No, neither of my DDs looked at me whils feeding. Nothing to worry about. Strange reaction from MW IYAM.

popcrackle · 05/03/2011 08:32

The fact that I watched movies, read books, surfed the internet, made phone calls and ate while bfing - helped me become an extended bfer. I think if I stared constantly into my babies eyes I would have got bored and gone rather mad.

Occasionally we may lock eyes. Occasionally my toddler now talks and feeds - so maybe he was watching me after all. Hmm

Antidote · 05/03/2011 08:32

I think ds only looked at me properly once when he was really tiny. He then cocked a leg and let rip a massive fart.

Twas most memorable!

My DS only recently started looking at me while feeding and he's 15 weeks. He'll guzzle a bit, then look up, smile and carry on eating again!

Longtalljosie · 05/03/2011 20:37

Bugger the eye contact and get yourself a good book Grin

Pretty sure DD didn't at that age either. In fact, when they're 4 months and realise you're there and break off feeding to grin at you every five minutes you'll be looking back on this period with nostalgia!
