have you tried putting the outer layer of a non-disposable over the top? Also, not sure a loose nappy designed for MUCH older babies is the way to go, so long as you are not doing them up too tight, the appropriate size of whatever make would be better. It actually gets easier when they are on solids as the poo is thicker or even proper solid poos so generally they are less messy. Are you still using water and cotton wool? You may find it easier to switch to wipes - get nice organic ones if you are worried about chemicals.

is he bf? If so, it can be normal have you tried going up a size in nappies.

Also, are they very runny?

Where is it escaping from the nappy? Are you managing to notice new poos and change him asap? I would suggest sticking with the right size nappy (the bigger of the two he is the right weight for).

Make sure when you put the nappy on it goes high enough up his body (move the clothes right out of the way) and you do it up snugly. It shouldn't have to be tight as to cause discomfort, but snug & flat against him when lying on the changing mat.

Good luck!

I noticed that making sure all the ruffles were pulled out on the legholes made a difference. If the ruffle was tucked up, the pooh tended to leak out.

Had the same thing with our DS. To be honest, we never really got it sorted while he was still only on milk. At least a few times a week, his poos would be so explosive they shot up his back (this usually happened when he was sitting down, hence the only way for it to go was up!). We tried all sorts of disposable nappies but none of them stopped the poo going up his back. We always made sure to have the nappy high up his back and reasonably tight, and we always pulled out the ruffles, but it still happened every so often.

The problem went once he'd moved onto solids. The poos are smellier but usually easier to deal with! If it's any consolation, DS' worst 'episodes' were around the 4 month mark. After that, they happened less frequently until they stopped once we started weaning him at 6 months.

In the meantime, I'd suggest having some of those disposable changing mats (or a maternity mat) to hand when he does a really bad one. It's less stressful as you can just chuck it out afterwards, and you can also use one to line the buggy just in case if you're worried about it happening when you're out and about.
