Teething help! All about the teats?

My normally placid, easy going, eternally smiling 14 week old DS has recently become an irritable, screeching little monster. I'm fairly certain he's teething and he was inconsolable last night. Sad

He's BF, but has always taken the odd bottle of expressed from DH and sisters when babysitting etc. He has refused point blank to take a bottle since Saturday night, having always been fine before. This is really bad news as i've got to do some keeping in touch days at work soon.

Has anyone else experienced this before? I've heard that Nuk and Dr Brown teats are very good for replicating the breast sucking action and are gentler on babies' gums. Can anyone recommend anything?

We've also just bought some homeopathic teething granules which apparently act for longer than the gels.

Also, is teething pain worse in the evenings, since this is when he suffers most - lying on his back.

I am no expert but are you sure he hasn't got a touch of reflux? If he is teething you can quite often see the gums widening and going a bit red but he would probably be irritable all day rather than just at night. It may be that he has wind too as he is having to suck harder with the bottles which can be uncomfortable. However I as I say I am no expert and hopefully someone with more knowledge will come and help you.

Thanks Figgyrolls. He is a very windy baby and always has been, but hasn't really suffered with reflux. I did ask the doc about that (when i was concerned about his wind) but he said he's thriving otherwise and he's not particularly sick. Wind doesn't tend to make him cry (he rarely cries about anything and usually stops when he's cuddled) usually - just grunt and groan. This was screaming like i've never heard from him before.

I'm pretty certain it's teething - there's a hard lump beginning to protrude at the top, he's chewing his hands and has had a lot of poos recently. He's been irritable all day, but does tend to get a lot worse in the evenings. It's just so out of character and i'm pretty certain there's nothing else wrong - he's not running a temperature.

Thanks anyway - hopefully others out there might be able to help.

Check the bottom gum as the first teeth usually come through there, also it can take a verrrrry long time for the little buggers to come through and then when they do they just go and disappear again Grin its something to do with gums swelling so I have been told. Good Luck, my ds will just suddenly scream in his sleep and then nothing Hmm. For no reason at all. Strange little creatures.
