Has anyone put baby straight into a 'big cot' rather than moses basket / swinging crib?

I bought one of those wee cribs for baby but want to use it for downstairs because I'm worried a moses basket won't be stable enough with my grabby 2 yr old around.

I've been looking for another for upstairs, but is it worth it?

Has anyone just bought a cot and put new baby straight into that?

Yes. Never had a moses basket or anything else, just a cot. Couldn't see the point.

DS went straight into his cot in our room. He did look very teeny tiny in it though!

CuppaTeaJanice · 26/02/2011 11:35

I just went straight to a cot, mainly because moses baskets make me feel a bit nauseous with all the frilly broderie anglaise frippery, they just look twee and I didn't want one in my house. No regrets, DS slept well in his cot from the start. We had a one-sided bedside cot which we used with grobags. It was lovely, sometimes DS and I went to sleep holding hands!!

Both mine went straight in a cot. No 3 probably will too, although I want a crib just because they look lovely Grin.

Yes, with no problems. We bought a proper mattress for the travel system carrycot (about 15 quid) for those situations when the cot wasn't practical, or when we wanted them to get the cot=night somewhere else=day thing. That worked fine too.

Both mine went into a cot from the first night, both very good sleepers and it's one less thing to get rid of :)

Thanks!

feel better about it now!

Mine went in the moses basket in the cot for a couple of weeks.

Mine were so tall that they only fitted in the moses basket for those weeks anyway! They napped in a coachbuilt pram downstairs, high up, sturdy and could wheel it outside as and when required Grin

Cot.
It's quite funny with a newborn, you put their feet to the foot of the cot, and there's a tennis court of mattress behind them doing nothing at all.
It's nice for them to have abit of space if they are arm/leg thrashers as they don't keep hitting the side of the basket & waking themselves up

my DD was tiny ( 5 lbs at birth) but we had cotbad already just placed her in it the other way round at one end, when swaddled it makes no differnce she was quite happy especially when in grobag, now she ,oves all over cotbad though even at 20lbs looks like room for another child but when she comes in our bed occasionally she seems to occupy most of a double bed!!!

sarahtigh · 26/02/2011 22:39

sorry way too many typos cotbed of course and should say moves all over cotbed

too late must go to bed instead of MNetting

DiscoDaisy · 26/02/2011 22:41

My first went in a carrycot but it was a nightmare as she used to like putting her arms out at right angles. This would result in her banging the side and waking herself up.
My other 4 DC went straight into a cot but we bought one that had the two different levels which you could put the mattress.

knuckingfackered · 26/02/2011 22:49

did massive cot that fits upto 2 year old but bought bolster/sausage type bit of kit which kept her still, supported and I think made her feel very secure

I had the same kind of bolster thing for mine that Knucking had by the sounds of it.

nowwearefour · 27/02/2011 20:23

yes mine went straight into a cot bed in their own room. they did look tiny but no probs at all. couldnt see the point of messing about with anything else.....

GregoryPeck · 27/02/2011 20:26

My DD did, she was swaddled anyway but as long as you remember 'feet to foot' it doesn't matter how big the cot is (hers was a cot bed). She did look funny just at one end of it but was fine, we just tucked her in nice and tightly.

gallicgirl · 06/03/2011 00:19

Can I ask how old your babies were when you moved them into their own room?

Our 6 week old DD has a moses basket in our bedroom but sometimes won't sleep in it. She is an arm flailer so wakes when she hits the sides of the basket. We have tried co-sleeping a few times when she won't settle but I don't like this so much as I worry about SIDS, rolling on her or falling out of bed and I don't sleep so well.

The trouble is our bedroom is very small so can't put a cot in it. I'm concerned that if we put DD in her cot in another room, we might not hear her when she cries despite having a baby monitor.

We might just be able to fit a cot bed in our bedroom but I'm not sure if this is suitable to be used as a permanent bed for another 4 months or so.

What do you think would be the best solution?

eileenslightlytotheleft · 06/03/2011 12:54

Gallic, have you tried swaddling her? I used a swaddling blanket (from JoJoMamaBebe) which was brilliant.

gallicgirl · 06/03/2011 15:24

yeah, tried it a couple of times but she's really not keen and the fists are out within minutes.

CarGirl · 06/03/2011 15:35

My eldest and youngest always slept in their own rooms from birth!! Number 2 lated 2 weeks before I couldn't cope with the lack of sleep (not her awake just me) and number 3 lasted 3 nights hence I didn't even try with the 4th.
