Gross Motor - Walking / Standing

Hello. DD is 9.5mths. Verbal, fine motor, social skills all excellent. On gross motor skills sits perfectly and has done since six months, reaches around for toys, can spin herself 360 whilst sitting. She had very little tummy time hated being on her stomach until 4 weeks ago. Since then she has started to roll quite a bit and sleeps on her stomach (first rolled around 4 months but then never really did it much after until recently). If put on her front she pushes herself backwards again only since a couple of weeks back. This week for the first time she has started to get on all fours and rock a bit. She can also support all her weight on her legs.

However i kind of have a nagging concern about her stability standing, she wobbles on her hips quite alot. Tonight i was holding her hands and she took several steps for the first time but her legs were all over the place - ie very uneven steps, crossing legs etc. She has had routine hip scans etc all normal. All developmental assessments normal but i cant help still worrying. I guess its because her brother was such a solid baby at this age and crawling and standing all over the place. There has definately been alot of improvement in starting to get mobile over last month but watching her trying to walk tonight just freaked me a bit.

Dont know what to think. Any thoughts appreciated.

?! She's 9.5 months old - that's very young to be anywhere near walking at all!!!! She needs to build up muscle strength around her hips by crawling, or just practising walking before she can be remotely stable. Nothing you say indicates to me there is any reason whatsoever to worry.

ps ds1 didn't bottom shuffle, crawl, walk, roll over, pull to stand, get himself to sitting, etc until he was 17 months old. Ds2 didn't crawl until 10 months and walked at 17 months - he is perfectly muscular, has good muscle tone, but very hypermobile (ds1 is both hypermobile and has low muscle tone). Lots of children are hypermobile. Maybe your dd is also a bit hypermobile, particularly compared with your ds, but if she can already get onto all fours and rock, it sounds as though she's near crawling-stage and therefore on track to be developing well within normal time frames.

When DS1 would not bear weight, at all at about 14 months the HV referred him to the GP. He would lift his feet up if you tried to hold him standing. Saw HV Thursday afternoon, made GP appt for Monday. Guess what? Over the weekend DS1 decided pulling to stand would be a great idea. GP didn't know why the HV bothered.

DS1 finally got round to walking at about 16 months. All perfectly within the realm of "normal". Grin

You don't have anything to worry about. Just enjoy the peace. You know what they're like once they get going!

Good grief Confused Pushy mum, much? I would say PFB but it seems you have a DS already. Just give the poor girl a break and stop obsessively charting every movement she makes. My sister's DD is 14 months and doesn't walk yet but (fortunately) she has a mother who appreciates that all children develop differently!

thanks all - i really need to stop obsessing about everything.
