my ds 14months still not walking, he really wants to walk and he push the walker at nursery (those that need to be pushed from the back)
but when he walks often seems Charlie Chaplien...is it because he has flat fleet or is it normal in baby that start to walk before they find the balance?...I booked an appointment with a specialist..but is in 2 weeks...and I want to buy some Chicco boots tomorrow..that support him..
in the meantime I'm worried....did you experience that?

14 months isn't late for walking.

and toddlers do walk funny

hunkerpumpkin · 17/10/2005 20:12

DS is 18mo and only just walking.

Walked like Lurch to begin with!

Please don't worry, don't buy boots and cancel the appointment with the specialist unless you have other concerns - he sounds absolutely fine to me.

hunkerpumpkin · 17/10/2005 20:12

Really really don't buy the boots - they need to learn to walk by feeling the floor under their feet.

RottenRhubarb · 17/10/2005 20:13

Mine was 19 months before he walked or crawled. He was surfing round the furniture for aaaages! 14 months is still considered to be early for walking, 18 months is the norm.
Boys are lazier too, or is that just mine?

Aero · 17/10/2005 20:13

Sounds pretty normal to me - I wouldn't worry tbh. He won't need shoes/boots until he's walking properly on his own for about six weeks. My ds2 was 17.5 mths before he was walking unsupported. Ds1 was 15 mths and dd was 14.5 mths, so, really, you shouldn't worry yet.

RottenRhubarb · 17/10/2005 20:13

Agree that bare feet is the best for walking.

BudaBabe · 17/10/2005 20:14

My DS was 15 months before he walked. Agree about boots - don't buy just yet.

He'll get there - don't worry - and then you'll be wishing he wasn't!!!

katymac · 17/10/2005 20:14

I agree with the others....14m isn't late, really - if you have concrens then see the specialist...but he is finding his balance and thats easier with bent legs

sasa15 · 17/10/2005 20:19

thank you for your advise...but at nursery all the babies were shoes..and he goes up and down on furniture,,,,he's wearing trainers at the moment but they are not good....support...proper walking shoes....they seems to be good for first walker....

don't know....

he has also leather sleepers...type...with elastic...those that most of the babies wear...

you dont have to buy shoes just cos everyone else does!

they are not good for their feet and it will confuse him if anything. ds1 didnt walk til he was 18 months. mil tried putting shoes on him and he refused to stand up at all. they wont help. please dont worry, he isnt late starting to walk anyway

hunkerpumpkin · 17/10/2005 20:23

He sounds fine. DS only had shoes when he'd been walking about five weeks - he wore socks before that.

Soft leather shoes fine for now. You'll slow him down by putting stiff boots on him, IMO.

He sounds absolutely fine - is it only because he's not walking yet that you want to see the specialist?

sasa15 · 17/10/2005 20:30

I'm worried that can have flat feet problem...as walks like Charlie Chaplin....

he can wear bear feet at school is cold...already....and slippery with socks

sasa15 · 17/10/2005 20:31

bare feet and not bear feet

OP posts:
RottenRhubarb · 17/10/2005 20:37

How about soft leather shoes at the nursery, and bare feet at home?

I thought all toddlers walked like Charlie Chaplin?

hunkerpumpkin · 17/10/2005 20:39

Honestly, the way he's walking is fine. They're unlikely to walk perfectly the first time they do it - it's brand new to them and all sorts of balance-related issues need sorting. DS still isn't sure what to do with his hands when he's walking!

sasa15 · 17/10/2005 20:45

ok that sound good....I think....
soft leather shoes at nursery and bare feet at home...we haven't got carpet and he keep having cold...so ...will see.....maybe socks...

OP posts:
hunkerpumpkin · 17/10/2005 21:13

Having cold feet won't give him colds - he's most likely getting them from children at nursery.

rummum · 17/10/2005 21:28

When son started walking he looked like clyde the orangatang (from every which way)... he looked hysterical.... bless him... it didn't last long, and he turned out OK...
I think that Gap sell socks that are grippy on the bottom.. they should stop him slipping..

toothyboy · 17/10/2005 21:31

I thought all babies/toddlers had flat feet. The arches don't develop until they've been walking for a while and the muscles develop. Can anyone back this up?

freakyzebra · 17/10/2005 21:32

Babies do have flat feet; it's normal. Their insteps develop slowly over the first 3-4 years of life. This is one reason going barefoot & wearing shoes as little as poss. is so valuable.

Go for velcro-fastening slippers with high insteps at nursery if they insist on shoes there. You may even start a trend.

freakyzebra · 17/10/2005 21:32

Snap toothboy, this is what the guy in the shoe shop was telling us a few weeks ago (fitting my 1yo & my 4yo's feet that day).

toothyboy · 17/10/2005 21:33

Thanks Freaky - I thought so!

I made my son some very soft felt tie up shoes when he was first attempting to walk, they protected his feet, stayed on better than the shop purchased ones, and ment he could still feel the floor.
