Baby 7mo repeatedly hitting himself in the head

Not hard, just repetitively. Is this normal? Also, he has started shaking his head from side to side really fast - looks very peculiar. Also normal? Bit worried something in his head is bothering him.

Mine does that - hits himself on the head repeatedly when feeding (and doesn't like me holding his hand to stop it) and is just at the end of a 3 week phase of shaking his head (like saying 'no') whenever he smiled, or was generally feeling happy..

I suspect it's normal..

Mine used to headbang at this age and apparently it's them finding their rhythm? Nothing to worry about though. If worried maybe ask the HV - see if she'll have a look in his ears maybe?

SharkSkinThing · 22/02/2011 19:42

Mine too - the shaking head thing was always a signal of being tired - he did it a lot in his pushchair, sort of a way of getting himself to sleep! Also does head hitting thing sometimes.

So I'd say it was normal, too...although maybe we should stay in touch for the next 20 years in case they turn out to be axe murderers..Grin

I suspecting confidence trickster for mine. He's shameless when it comes to harassing people (anyone.. in queues, on the bus) to pay attention to him.

Mine's a real charmer, especially likes the ladies, so I'd say con man too Grin

Why are babies so weird?

It's the weirdness that keeps us interested..and flummoxed. No one said it would be the sheer randomness of it all that could be so tiring..

Greenwing · 23/02/2011 19:17

Two of mine did this.
One for no apparent reason, the other turned out to be uncomfortable with 'glue ear' and he ended up having to have tonsils and adenoids removed and grommets inserted.

Might be worth getting him checked out thoroughly just in case.

mangostar · 24/02/2011 22:42

Mine is a head shaker too. Got it checked out by the ped. Apparently very common and normal.

If looks like bothering then check with doc, also quite common with ear infections.

beanlet · 25/02/2011 09:13

Def nothing wrong with his hearing, so think it must be 'normal' headshaking!

My 7 month old shakes his head as well, often when people are talking/interacting with him. It's quite funny as they're normally asking him questions (do you like that toy? you recognise granny, don't you? etc) and he's sitting there shaking his head at them as if to say no to everything!
