Nappy changing/pre-potty training

Not quite a potty training question, so hope it's okay to post it here...

DS is very nearly three, and shows no sign of wanting to be potty trained, despite seeming to understand the idea. For example, he's been promised treats/presents for using the potty, but has never even done a wee in the potty. I don't want to push it, as I want to stay relaxed around the issue [despite what DM and MIL would have to say Grin Hmm]

All his friends of the age seem to be either fully or partly potty trained, but i'm not fussed as I hear many stories of boys not getting potty trained until 3 or even 4. What does concern me is his complete hatred of having his nappy changed [or his clothes for that matter]. He seems quite happy to sit in a soiled nappy, and quite often I have to actually sit on him in order to change his nappy [not sit with my weight of course, but he is too strong for me to restrain any other way - and i can't really leave him nappy free while he shows no desire at all to use the potty].

Should I be concerned that he is so happy to sit in a dirty nappy at an age when his peers are generally using the potty? Is it usual for him to fight back against changing time this much? I have used little bribes to get him to co-operate - rarely works.

Thanks all! Smile

I think it is quite normal! DS2 (2.10) is also not overly keen on the idea of potty training. Up until a few weeks ago he wouldn't even sit on one. We have had a few wees on the potty but I think think this is more luck than anything else (and due to the fact that after being offered a milky bar in return for a wee, DS sat there for about 15 minutes until one came out!)

DS1 was also quite lazy when it came to potty training. He was 2.10 when we bit the bullet and went for it. We felt that he was ready but being lazy and we went cold turkey. He got it in 3 days and has only had a handful of accidents since (now 4.10) usually when he has left it too late because he is busy doing something.

WRT the dirty nappy, DS2 sometimes tells us he has done poo-poos but sometimes (like last night) won't bother because he is too busy playing and doesn't want to be disturbed. I needed a gas mask when I went into his room as the smell was so bad but he was quite happy sitting playing with his cars and DID NOT want to be changed! DS2 used to be a bit like your DS so we made him responsible for getting hte wipes and nappy. This seems to have made him feel a bit more grown up and involved. Maybe worth a try?

Stay relaxed about the potty training and don't worry about what others say - they all develop in their own way. According to MIL both her boys were dry in the day by age 1 and through the night before they were 2 Hmm. DS1 still not dry at night and I don't care!!! (well, maybe a little but he just isn't ready Smile)!

Thanks Poogles - very reassuring. Actually, getting him to fetch his own nappy and wipes is a brilliant idea. He really seems to want to 'do things himself' at the moment - so it might do the trick.

Yes, good to just nod and smile at the DMs and MILs with this issue Grin
