Nappy Rash - Could you advise me please?

DD, 4 months has nappy rash - we were dealing with this with by cleaning her botty with water and cotton wool and then applying sudocrem.

Just as I was settling her for the night I changed her bum, she had poo'd, after cleaning her up I noticed that the rash looked really violent (for want of a better word) and it also looked a bit broken to me...

Could you ladies please advise what my next step is? Any particular products you would recommend?

poor little dd, i feel terrible for her having a wee sore botty :(

We had an awful time and it still rages when her new teeth appear, is bizarre how there is that link. Someone told me about Metanium - you can get in boots and you only need a tiny amount, smells foul, but after using it for a couple of days it was amazing. I don't use it for too long or it drys skin too much, or sometime alternate it with sudocream, but works well at night. Hope it works.

felicity - you are my guiding star!

Many Thanks for the advice, do you get metanium from supermarkets or is it more of a chemist type product?

I echo netanium it's amazing & works immediately. And doesn't smell foul I don't think.

milkyway2007 · 19/02/2011 22:01

The best thing you can put on it is Metanium - gosh, my dd had a very bad nappy rash problem - she has a very sensitive bottom (lol) and always got a rash with every poo - so the doctor prescribed her metanium when she was 9 months - omg, everything finished within a day. I used it everyday on her botty until she was potty trained last November. You can get it really cheap in Tesco - about £2.40 I think. Boots is more expensive. Tesco do offers sometimes - so keep a lookout you can get it half price or bogof.

so it's unanimous! :)

Metanium it is then, thank you all so much for the advice.

Yes metanium is amazing! Just don't do what I did and go to the chemist and ask for meconium!!! Blush

Just to add that if it doesn't clear up then it may be fungal and something like canesten would be best.

We had a bout of nappy rash (that included some weeping/open wounds Sad) and nothing worked - I tried sudocrem, bepanthen, metanium and we only use washable wipes but I even switched back to water only - until I tried canesten. It started clearing up almost immediately but I used it for a full week after the rash cleared.

I would try metanium too, but it could also be a thrush rash - my ds had this really badly. If you take her to the HV or GP they can tell you if it's fungal. We got Canestan HC cream - it's anti-fungal with hydrocortisone, and it cleared it up straight away.

Wash her in the bath with a mild soapless cleanser, rather than with cotton wool and water (which doesn't get rid of the bacteria). Then dry on a towel.

Trina82 · 20/02/2011 16:55

Metanium or Bepanthum is very good aswell...try to leave her nappy off for a while if you can to let her bum breather a bit, and dry off properly before putting another nappy and cream on x

moaningminniewhingesagain · 20/02/2011 17:30

Bepanthan or sudocrem for mildly pink. Metanium for super sore angry nasty nappy rash. If they don;t help and it is dotty looking is may be fungal - Canesten.

Avoid wipes if sore, a gentle wash and pat dry. Nappy free time if you can. Frequent nappy changes.

Metanium really is the dogs bollocks though, but it stains clothing.

giggling @ itstheyearzero - I would have loved to have seen that Grin

KazBarTheFriendlyGhost · 20/02/2011 19:25

thanks all for your comments - applied metanium at every nappy change today and already she seems happier....phew!

Thanks all :)

Another good tip is Camomile tea - dunk a few teabags in her bath and used cooled tea to wash her bottom at nappy changes; it's apparently very soothing (but obviously no substitute for Metanium for healing)

Also try not to let your little one squeeze it all over the carpet as it's a bitch to get out!

Gillbr · 20/02/2011 22:24

My DD had awful nappy rash for approx 10/12 weeks and nothing worked...even Metanium! We used a combination of camomile tea to wash her bum and also a camomile based wonder cream called Kamilosan. It's amazing stuff and cleared it up.

Looks like you're sorted now but thought I'd add something just in case. My daughter when she was 9 months had lactose intolerance and had really bad nappy rash - broken, bleeding, bright red etc. When she eventually went into hospital I asked how to get rid of her nappy rash and the nurses simply scooped shed loads of sudocrem onto their hands and slapped it on. The nappy rash was gone within days and I now use it in large quantities whenever she has a rash. Ignore what it says on the tin - i.e. thin layer. Slap it on!
