Boy 7 - addicted to Match Attax (with all the nasty adict behaviours)

My son has a bit of a problem with Match Attax cards. At least I think that's what it is - am trying to avoid the suspicion that it might be a bigger problem with honesty full stop. We keep catching him out when telling what I could describe as "whoppers" around the cards.

He as bought a box of 100 packs recently as part of a reward scheme - they were put aside until he earned them. What ensued was that he basically stole the cards and opened them all (secreted away at the top of the house ) and when confronted denied that he had. Know it sounds dramatic, but it is almost like he is a junkie for the cards - he will do and say anything to feed his habit.

Worse still - once banged to rights and punished and all the promises not to reoffend had been agreed.... he did exactly the same thing again within 24 hours.

Am I being paranoid - is this normal for a 7 year old - I just don't like the way he looks me straight in the eye and swears black is white. My older son sometimes tries to bend the truth, but one of my looks and he will fold - not so the younger one.

He is either a liar or an addict or a normal 7 year old - which.

Help - don't want to think the worst.

Erm, get rid of the cards surely.

I think its unfair to have 100 packs in the house...how much temptation!?

Have thrown the cards away - just caught him stealing them out of the bin....

I think they are designed to make children addicted. We collected them last year, and I felt uncomfortable with the nervy, anxious way that DS (9) would open the packets; it is all about getting an adrenaline rush at the possibility of getting good cards.

It's the same kind of feeling that hooks you onto fruit-machines, or coin-pushers.

That said, many a happy hour can be had filing them in the little pockets and swapping/trading with friends.

I used them as a reward sometimes, but never told DS where I kept my little stash; usually he would have to "earn" a packet before we'd buy them together.

In some ways I don't blame him rescuing them from the bin. What a waste of money to just chuck them...
