Sicky baby, loads of wind?

My DS seemed to have reflux, he spat up a lot up to the age of 8 months and, I thought, had quite a bit of wind. He got out of it and I never needed to give him the gaviscon we were given by the doctor.

I was hoping that DD (12 days) would be different, not so much washing, constant clothes/bedding changing. If anything, she seems worse.

She hiccups a lot, has sooo much wind from both ends, I have never know a baby like it. She has also thrown up a couple of times over the last 2 days, but as DH says, its when she hasn't winded, then you lay her down and either she is sick or you pick her up and she brings it up.

She is feeding (formula) quite often, seems to want a bit every hour to 2 hours at the moment, although early morning she will take a bigger feed and sleep for quite a while. Later afternoons and evenings, she seems to want quite frequent feeds where she is having 8-9 a day.

I did BF for 5 days and even then she had quite a bit of wind and would come off so I could wind her, that was pretty frequent too.

Any ideas?

Hi there, sorry to read about your sickly LO. I'm not an expert but have you tried changing her milk. It could be an intollerance. Try feeding her so she's as upright as possible so the milk is going straight down. You can also buy a wedge of foam so that when asleep you can prop her up to reduce her being sick when she's asleep. Also it could be she's not happy with the bottles or not forming a tight suction around the teat so is getting lots of air. Sometimes winding every few ounces works well although very tedious.
Lots of info sorry. Hope some of it is helpful.

Thanks for the reply. Smile

Haven't tried changing her milk yet. Going to speak to the MW on Monday about it.

We have propped up one end of her moses basket to tip her up a bit, but like DS this has made no difference. Will try feeding her more upright.

We are also winding every couple of ounces as she does gulp like mad, she did the same when I was BF as well and she had a good latch.

Try having her upright for a while after feeding too, which can help with reflux.
My DS is very windy and doesn't bring it up easily and invariably it now comes out his bottom rather than as a burp! I too have heard nothing like it!

Just recently i've started rubbing his tummy clockwise and then downwards for a few minutes after feeding before gently raising him into a sitting position and rubbing his back. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Just the rubbing seems to calm his wind though, even if he doesn't bring anything up.

We've tried everything - infacol, gripe water, dentinox and colief. Have you tried any of those?

Not yet, got the MW coming for the last time tomorrow so I'm going to speak to her about it.

I would see the doctor as opposed to the midwfe! My ds2 had terrible colic and reflux when he was little and I kept getting palmed off with stuff, he would throw up every feed, and getting him to take a feed would be stressful in itself, he would scream and wriggle like he was in pain, until the point of almost falling asleep and would then drink it in his sleep and throw it all up!!! The health visitors just told me that some babies are sicky babies and that I was over reacting, in the end the doctor tried so many different medicines and then sent me to the pediatic department at the hospital who put him on prescriptive milk annd the whole thing stopped straight away! It was bliss! It was a shame it took sooo long to get to the bottom of, but as soon as he was put on it, it stopped! Hope you find a solution!

I have spoken to the MW today who actually eased my fears. As she said, at least DD is bringing out the wind, whichever end it is coming from. She said it would be more of a problem if she wasn't winding, which I agree with. Also a couple of other things I was questioning myself about, she said is the wind. I do agree with her as after reading different threads on here, I realise that actually, DD is sleeping, comfortably with no problems (apart from the constant noise she makes when asleep) and only cries for a feed or when she wants changing. She is a very contented baby so I can't complain at all.

Also, like the MW said, at least she is feeding alot in the evenings which is storing her up for the night and she only having 1 or 2 feeds in the night. I really can't complain.
