When does the grunting/snuffling in newborns disappear?

I vividly remember DS being the same. He lastest 2 weeks in our room before I couldn't cope with it anymore.

DD is the same. At the moment, DH is off work for another 2 weeks and DD is sleeping downstairs with him (I snore and DH has restless legs so we don't sleep in the same bed). Once he goes back to work, I'm going to have to have DD with me as we only have a tiny 2 bed house and we don't want to put her in with DS yet.

I also have M.E. so need as much sleep as I can get but every little grunt has me instantly awake and I always have trouble getting to sleep again. I never knew that all newborns were so noisy. My MW said her DD only lastest 1 night with her.

Is there a roughish time that they stop being sooooooo noisy in their sleep? Or does anyone have any hints or tips on dealing with it? With DS, at least I could rest in the day, but having a 3 year old means I can't do that now as DD always seems to want feeding at DS's nap time (he does still sleep in the day).

I don't remember, but what I do know is that now he's a bit older and gets colds, his hysterical wailing at 3 am because he can't breathe through his nose is much much more disturbing mummy-sleep-wise than the snuffling ever was. If it bothers you, put his cot slightly further away.

CrapBag · 18/02/2011 12:55

There is no further away to put DD's moses basket unfortunately.

My DS did exactly the same! It stopped at around 7 weeks. They are noisy little blighters! x

i love all the snuffling and grunting! my boy is 3weeks and there seems to be a lot less of it, and he's more relaxed in the cot with his arms out rather than tightly curled up round his head.

my older boy also still sleeps after lunch and luckily baby does too - i cluster feed as much as possible in the morning and go out for a walk almost every morning so by lunchtime he seems to settle for a longer stretch.

Mine is 16 weeks and still makes loads of noise.

I recommend earplugs - you can hear any relevant noises quite easily but muffles the general snuffling.

Mine sounds like a sow!

She's 12 weeks tomorrow.

Second ear plugs, though I don't actually use them myself, as she generally drops into a silent sleep once she's settled herself.

Oh god ds was awful. I couldn't wait to get him out of our room.

He got much better around 2... years. Sorry. Hope you don't have to wait that long!

CrapBag · 18/02/2011 19:58

DD will be in with DS before that time, thankfully and he generally sleeps through anything so it shouldn't bother him.

Obviously its a good thing that mums are so finely tuned to our babies, but it can be a real pita at times, Smile.

Will try an earplug in one ear when she comes in with me I think. Thanks, and hoping it isn't 2 years!!

Hello :)
I think my LO stopped grunting at 12 weeks. Around about the same time as she figured out how pump and burp on her own. Grin

CrapBag · 20/02/2011 19:54

I do wonder if the wind has something to do with it. I thought DS was a windy baby but DD is far worse, it is non stop, to the point where I think there may be a reflux issue. DS had mild reflux but DD does seem to be worse. Sure the grunting is linked to possibly being uncomfortable, If she is being held, she never does it, she doesn't seem to do it much in the day either which is odd, why nights! Smile

My dd would grunt almost non-stop after her first feed of the night, drove me insane as she didn't wake or cry just grunted & strained. I stuffed cotton wool in my ears which muffled the sound a bit. It got less & less and stopped completely by 7 weeks.
