How to stop dd moving around cot at night

My dd has recently moved from her moses basket to her cot and she is definitely making the most of the new space. Every night she moves around the cot and ends up with her head pushed against the side which wakes her up. I've got a bumper in place to protect her from the bars but she still gets very upset when she hits the side. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep her in one place? She also ends up freezing because she comes out from under her blanket (sleeping bags don't work because they bunch up around her legs and she gets frustrated). Any ideas?

Regarding the temperature thing, either let her get used to a sleeping bag (she will but it may take a few nights) or dress her warmly so she doesn't need covers. This moving around thing is going to get worse, not better.

On that note, she will get used to her cot, including being up against the sides (my ds' had a phase of getting their legs jammed b/w the bars but they learnt pretty quickly not to do that) so I think you do nothing. Or rather, I don't think you can stop her moving round (unless you make her a velcro suit Smile) so it is just a case of waiting it out, I'm afraid. Sympathy - it can be hard to accept anything that disrupts their fragile, fragile sleep at this age.

Well, we roll up a blanket so it's like a long sausage and put it around her in a horseshoe shape, obviously not touching the top of her head, but the curve at the top. We then tuck a light blanket over the top of it and under the mattress to prevent it from unravelling and so that our DD can't get tangled in it if it does unravel. Our DD is a real fidget and does crawl around the cot now that she's 8 months, but this really helped when she was first in the cot and kept her more in the centre and away from the edges so she couldn't bump her head.

With regards to the blankets, we have the same problem. We do put her to bed in warm babygros and tuck her in before we go to bed, but she always wakes up on top of the covers. Still working on that one.

Thanks for your ideas, I'll try the sausage towel tonight.
I think the velcro suit could be a best seller!!!!:)

Loving the velcro suit idea! Also second the sausage - we were taught to do this whilst DD was a few weeks old and in hospital as she wouldn't sleep. They called it 'nesting'. Stops them moving so much and helps them feel secure. DD is now 3 and in a big (double) bed and we still do this with extra cushions down the sides. Personally I do the same thing too when on my own as it's very comforting.... Smile

Sleeping bags (or swaddling, if they're still tiny) are the solution to most sleep problems!

If the bag is very thin and twisting around, you could either get a heavier, slightly padded one - they don't twist as easily - or fold the foot end up and pin it to the waist of the bag with some old-fashioned nappy safety pins.

But you also need to tough it out. She will get used to the new space if you don't keep 'rescuing' her.
