Rolling, or not?

PFB so not sure about this Grin: My son 5.5m has not yet seemed interested in rolling in either direction. I know theres still time yet but I'm not sure he's going to bother. On his back he will grab his toes and lean over, but not flip. On his front he leans back and tries lifting his bum, twist his shoulders and head and gets bored and screams.

TBH he is far more interested in sitting and standing (with support, obv) he just wants to be on his feet all the time.

I'm not concerned as such as he has pretty strong legs and neck muscles, but people are starting to ask when he first rolled, is he rolling both ways yet? and "you'll have to stop using the changing station cos he'll fall off"

Should I be worried yet? Or not at all? Are there some babies who just bypass some milestones?

My PFB(!) is 6 months old and also isn't rolling. Looked like he was going to about 6 weeks ago but now is also much more interested in standing up, bouncing on the Jumperoo and scooting around the floor on his back. My dad is a GP and he said not to worry about it. Also that bigger babies roll later as they have to gather more momentum!

ethelina · 15/02/2011 08:41

Ah well that's reassuring! Boy also loooves his jumperoo and he is a big long baby. TBH I think he's going to bum-shuffle and walk and miss out crawling. He just wants to be upright.

1st of all, I still use the changing table for my 20 month old and he's never rolled off. Just keep one hand on him at all times.

2nd of all he didn't roll over until he was 8 months. For ages he would go so far to one side it certainly seemed to me he would roll over, but he just never did! Until, boom! he did! And scared the heck out of himself!

So don't worry, there's time.Grin

I know a baby who is 11 months and she never rolls but always likes to stand and has even take a few steps.

She always hated tummy time.

They are all different.

ethelina · 15/02/2011 10:17

Thanks Tee and Tigress, Boy hates tummy time too. Guess I shall stop worrying about other peoples comments then. Grin

You'll be much much happier if you do that! I usually just smile and nod when people tell me 'oh he hasn't blah blah blah? You must be so worried!'

Um. No. He's fine, thanks!

ethelina · 15/02/2011 10:32

Yeah I do mostly Smile not usually one for nagging doubts but this one got me.

DD could walk before she could roll (she was about ten months old).

Do you use a baby sleeping bag/gro-bag? They can stop them rolling over for quite a long time. We use sleeping bags and my 5.5 mo doesn't really roll either. She rolls onto side from back, but that's it, she won't go all the way onto her tummy. She doesn't try to roll any further. She will not lie down without protest when awake anyway, she just wants to sit up (unaided) all the time. She also grabs her feet when sitting and then topples onto her front that way - head over heels, and seems to enjoy that, although she doesn't like being on her tummy for more than a few minutes at a time. That could be the reason she wont roll onto her tummy from her back though - Maybe it's uncomfortable for her to lie on her tummy.

InspirationalBreadbin · 15/02/2011 11:26

My 5.75 has rolled 6 times front to back since about 14 weeks - but all of them were by 'mistake' he was leaning over to look at something and rolled over. He doesn't have a clue how to do it.
However, just last week, he worked out how to roll back to front, on purpose. He now does this constantly, then wails when he has had enough and I then roll him back on his back. This is like every 5 mins! I am hoping he works out how to roll front to back soon!

bluesmile10 · 15/02/2011 13:35

My 8.5 ds has only just learnt to roll in last 3 weeks. Similarly to yours, ethelina, he only ever wanted to be up on his feet - and still does. Makes no attempt to crawl and likewise hates being on his tummy!! I think they all just do things at different times and sometimes in different order!

Firawla · 15/02/2011 13:40

i still use changing table for 2 yr old! obviously you will be there supervising them so they dont roll off or jump off.
i wouldn't worry too much about the rolling just sounds like he is more interested in standing and being upright, he will be able to roll eventually just might not be interested in using it as a method of transport. neither of mine really used rolling a lot, i dont really remember ds1 rolling til after he could crawl

ethelina · 15/02/2011 14:24

Gourd - we use a sleeping bag, he's far too active to do without Grin

His trick for the last 2-3 weeks when on his back and wanting attention at night is to slam his legs hard down over and over and over and over and over... til one of us goes into him, then cheekily grins at us as if to say, "what took you so long!"

My 8 month old doesn't roll and has only been sitting for a couple of weeks, she has rolled front to back a few times but that's all. She just isn't much of a mover, much more of a watcher and thinker!

fairimum · 15/02/2011 15:46

My DS is now 10 months, sat at 7 months, but didn't roll until 9 months, in the last week he has gone from rolling to crawling, pulling himself up on furniture and now cruising! lol

KSal · 15/02/2011 18:08

fairimum my DD now 2.5 was similar to your DS... then she walked across the room unaided a week after she turned 1 :)

DS 5mo not rolling either way yet...

missedith01 · 15/02/2011 22:31

Mine rolled over at about 6 weeks old. We were so proud thinking we had a prodigy but then he didn't do it again until he was about 6 months old Grin.

Woodlands · 15/02/2011 23:04

ah this is reassuring - my 7 month old doesn't roll over. He is a big heavy long baby and he's nowhere near crawling, unlike many of the other babies the same age we know. I'm quite glad he's still immobile and am making the most of being able to leave him in one place and know he can't move!

Cosmosis · 16/02/2011 09:20

make the most of it! DS is 5.5 months and has just started rolling back to front on purpose and does it all the time. Only he can't do it the other way, hates being on his front and just wails to be rescued. I'm thinking of setting up some sort of rigging so I can just pull a string to roll him back on to his back Grin

ethelina · 22/02/2011 23:42

Well bugger me! If he didn't roll over tummy to back on Sunday, 5 days after I moaned on here about him not rolling yet.

Power of Mumsnet.
