hi,

DC (3.1) has speech delay. receptive speech is a bit more than a year behind (naturally, expressive speech as well).

on the waiting list for SLT therapy. we will also see a private SLT.

I am really quite worried what this means in the long term. I know that every child is different... but wondered about experiences re RECEPTIVE language delay (without ASD).

anyone been there? did your DC catch up?

TIA

dc3 and dc4 both had poor speech. dc3 (girl) was just so shy she barely spoke to others. after her first term at nursery her speech just clicked and was 'normal'.
dc4 (boy) was worse than dc3. he chatted constantly but could only really be understood by immediate family, although we couldn't always understand him! he started speech therapy aged 3.5ish and it was the best thing ever. after the first session he could say the m sound and the beginning of words(he couldn't beforehand) and it went from strength to strength. it was hard work and we had to put the hours in to teach and help him. i slowed my speech down, as i'm quite a fast talker, so he could hear every sound in my words, this helped hugely. he's now almost 6 and has no speech problems, and hasn't had for about a year, maybe more! it takes dedication, the more you put in, the more you'll get out, and the quicker your dc will talk well. good luck Smile

We recently had a diagnosis and have found SLT (private while we wait for NHS) really helpful.

We have also found lots of other resources a great use - Sookie and Finn DVDs and associated flash cards for specific games aimed at receptive langauge problems; Teach me to Talk DVDs (this is a US site, google Laura Mize and you'll find more info). Feel free to private message me. We've spent literlally hundred on DVDs etc... Not all of which help receptive language problems. I am more than willing to chat about the kinds of 'games' you can play with your child to help.

What we've noticed with DS is he simply isn't listening / hearing. While he's not deaf, he just doesn't notice anything other than what he's focussed on. And, with nothing going in, nothings going to come out. Not sure if this is the same kind of problem you have...
