short legs

my ds is 18months and i'm getting a bit worried about his short legs.
he seems to be of average height for his age but i have noticed that his legs seem very short and someone at playgroup mentioned it last wee too so it is obvious.

both husband and i have long backs and short legs but not that you would notice (only when getting clothes to fit)

my question is, when would this become an issue, or when would someone pick this up and investigate if it was a problem?

he is a very strong and active child so from that point of view i'm not concerned, it just looks really odd.

am i just being stupid?

I'm shy about my short legs but like you it's just a self-consciousness thing. Are you worried it may have medical implications in your son's case?

i don't really know what I think...... SOmeone else has pointed it out as weird, and now i think something is wrong with him......

I guess he is still small, and his height is ok so maybe I should just wait to see how he develops.

DS was like this - tops were age 2-3 but trousers 12-18 months when he was about the same age as your DS. He's evened out a bit more now he's 3 - had one massive growth spurt where his legs seems to grow 3" overnight!

Am Angry that someone actually pointing it out to you though, cheeky fuckers.

PeggyGuggenheim · 12/02/2011 14:43

I agree that was mean of the person to point it out!

My DHs best friend has short legs, so do his sons. DH is convinced that this is the reason that his friend can't ski Hmm
All the boys are fine just a bit stumpy in the leg dept and have to have their trousers taken up a bit.

thanks for the replies guys, i think i was being stupid tbh. I was just hurt by the other woman's comments and thought maybe I should have noticed and 'done' something. QS you're right, he's a lovely little boy and i over reacted....stupid woman with her big mouth....and i should grow thicker skin, god knows how I will cope once he is at school!!

thanks again

Gosh, all of my older 3 dc have tiddly legs, but longer bodies, and they always have had, it just seems to be less 'noticeable' as they get older!

DD is 13yo, and is 5ft2 tall. She wears a ladies size 8 top, but in trousers she is still in kids age 12-13.

DS1 is nearly 9yo, is 4ft8 tall. He wears age 11-12 tops...but age 9-10 trousers (and only just in that size trousers this week, he's been in the tops for 2 months already)

DS2 is most noticeable, an the one I always got comments about when he was a toddler. He's now 7yo, 4ft4 tall, he wears age 9-10 tops...and age 5-6 trousers!

DS3 is onle 2 1/2 weeks old, but he seems to be the other way round - very long legs but a short body. Hmm

Should add, the worst thing is that you can't ever find bloody pyjamas to fit without buying two sets!

(helpful hint - buy tracksuit trousers and a cheap 3-pack of t-shirts from tescos for sleepwear if your dc are ifferent sizes on the top and bottom!)

DN was like this, he still has shorter legs and a longer body but before the age of 5 the disparity was bigger and more noticable. His legs seemed to have a growth spurt and catch up between the ages of 4-5. DN is very tall for his age though!

What a mean lady to comment on it though!
