How to sooth a 5 week old baby that is teething?

My DD is 5 weeks and 3 days old, yesterday at a routine visit to docs he discovered a tooth has popped through.

She is a very contented baby but had been a bit crotchety for a couple of days, she has been really grumpy all day today and keeps putting her little hand on her face at the location where the tooth is coming through and chewing her hands.

I feel so sad for her but she's too little for any normal teething remedies - been advised 8 weeks (and had her injections) for bonjela and such and she lacks the motor skills for a teething ring.

Is there anything i can do?

Dentinox teething gel is suitable from birth

Cuddles, cuddles and more cuddles ... did I mention cuddles?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 11/02/2011 20:06

Ashton & Parsons powders are brilliant too.

She made the funniest face when i used the Dentinox Smile but she didn't cry and it seems to have helped along with the many many cuddles.

Thanks for the advice.

The powders are great - either Ashtons & Parsons or Nelsons. Also chamomile granules can be used from birth and really helped to calm and soothe my DD. She has been teething since 6 weeks (now fifteen weeks and no full tooth yet :( ) so I feel your pain! I found Calpol useless (which I think is from 8 weeks) and yes the best remedy is cuddles. Oh, and weirdly, being naked! When she's in a teething related paddy and nothing will soothe her, I make sure the heating's whacked up and take all her clothes off (including nappy - watch out for spills) and let her have a kick about on her back and she loves it, cheers her right up

oh bless her, I never heard of such a young baby getting a tooth...

tryharder I was surprised as well but apparently some babies are even born with teeth and even though most babies don't start teething until 3 months it's not uncommon for it to happen earlier. She is a big baby and was a couple of weeks late so that might explain it a bit!
