Prising the 'tired' 4yr old out of the pushchair

Much as I love my pushchairs I am getting very tired pushing 4yr old DD up and down the hills up to 6 times a day. My problem is that we have a 1.4 mile [thank you google maps] walk to school/nursery. If I take the pushchair she wants to be in it all the time and if I don't she may start out happily enough but then the lagging and the whingeing start. She has a scooter but again the lagging and whingeing plus I end up carrying the scooter.
Any tips as to handling this frustrating stage?

I agree with what chestnut said, trying to find a way for her to walk for some of the trips.
Walking 1.4 miles 4 times a day seems a lot to ask, but if you say there was a problem this morning with 1 attempt at doing the 1.4 mile walk, that would suggest to me that it is not about asking her to walk too far when she is worn out, but just that she is used to not having to make the effort to walk. I think you'll have to just be strict. Does she go to Nursery in the morning then? I would start with making her walk there and even back, is that at lunchtime? Could you give an incentive for lunch if she walks back? Or even stop for lunch if you think she may be tired and that would be better than trying to walk back when she is hungry? Then when you go back to school later let her sit the puschair then for now, but work up to stopping that at a later date.
I think she needs to get used to walking more.

We did better today even though it was raining.
She half scooted half walked to nursery. We walked a bit to the bus stop and got the bus back home. Pushchair to school and she voluntarily walked part way home again.
In Sept she will go to school so not as many trips.

Tricky. Think you have to build up your stamina gradually. We walk about 0.5 miles and that's much further than most his peers who live nearer the school (he's same age as your DD). Reckon we could manage about twice as far if pushed but no more.

Mind you, my friend who's son is now in Year 1 and lives about 1.2 said that by Spring term of Reception he was fine walking- she took the bus before that. I think it's partly age and partly what they're used to. Personally I would ditch pushchair and do scooter/walking/bus combos. Sounds like wot you did today Smile. I bet in a year's time you'll have forgotten the pain in the * it used to be.... Oh forgot to say, I "have" to make up a funny story everyday on the way to school (nursery) or we wouldn't get there.....there are a few themes to cope with this demand, and he joins in making them up too, so quite fun (when not hungover/horrendously tired etc etc!)

:) at the funny stories.

I guess people think we are quite mad when we sing loudly "the elephants on the bus go stomp stomp stomp..." :o
silly walk are also a favourite, not easy with baby in the sling.
or rowing races (arm movements like rowing). anything to keep us going.
