how important is it to have a recline position in a pram?

hi

ds is 8.5mo, we're just moving him out of his wonderful travel system Sad to the next stage car seat and normal pram. dh wants to get a stroller to fit in the car and LOVES the micralite superlite fastfold here

the problem is it doesn't have a full recline position. how important is this? ds seems to sleep fine whilst slightly reclined in his car seat. but ive heard some people and read some reviews that say a flat position is best in a pram/stroller for naps. will the lack of a full recline be a problem for us?

(also posting in prams forum)

thanks

Why can't you just use the pushchair part of the travel system Confused?

If it's just to keep in the car and is only likely to be used for odd occasions then why not just get a stroller like a MacLaren that is small AND has a recline?

The trouble with not having a recline is that when they fall asleep their heads fall forwards onto their chests which isn't very comfortable. At his age he's likely to be falling asleep in it for quite some time to come so IIWY I'd be looking at something that is comfortable for him, rather than something you like the look of.

i do agree with you, i think i'm coming at it from a practical point of view, and dh is coming at it from a 'oh its so cool and funky' point of view! but we're usually a good balance to each other- on things like this we end up with something thats both practical and cool (such as our new Recaro Polaric rear facing car seat Smile)

do you know which maclarens have a recline?the one i saw the other day didn't, but they only had one maclaren.

the travel system pushchair will stay at home for when we're out and about locally, we just want something smaller for the car and when we go away and need boot space.

thanks!!

The Maclaren Techno XT goes completely lie flat.

ChestnutSoup · 07/02/2011 19:29

I have a Baby Jogger City Mini that reclines fully and folds pretty small to go in the car (though it folds in half rather than telescopically), so might be worth a look. I've had it since DD2 was born and it looks and is fab.

sungirltan · 07/02/2011 19:34

that microlite does look cool. dm tried to force me to buy it because dd looked sooo comfy in it until i folded it and realised its about 6 feet long folded! its a nice buggy but check it fits in the boot first!

i think reclining is important for nb - 6 months but less so for older babies. dd has a quinny buzz which reclines flat almost but i really dont recline it that often, not even every week because she seems really comfy sleeping at the slight tilt instead.

I have a petite star zia. Folds really small and reclines fully. I did have a micralite that was my sisters and tbh I hated it. Found it really skittish when pushing it and any slight bump in the road, it would stop fast on it. Very annoying. The one I had was also very long and you would need a very wide boot for it to fit in. The fold up mechanisms was also a bit of a pain and would jam. The width at the front was really wide also and hard to get in shops.

Sorry if a harsh review!

I do have the recaro polaric too and love it. Great seat. I like my petite star zia, but meant to buy the petite star zia plus with handles that extend. You can get one with four wheels and I think you can get maxi cosi adaptors for it should you have another baby.

The Baby Jogger City mini looks pretty fab too.

As for the recline, I would buy one with a recline.

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 07/02/2011 19:40

It's a very cool looking buggy, but it doesn't look like it would fold that small. Another vote for the Maclaren Techno XT.

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 07/02/2011 19:41

Oh and as for the recline - I'd never buy one without it! It does also mean if you have another child you have one that's suitable from birth, for in the car for those quick trips out!

nappyaddict · 09/02/2011 12:27

I liked to make my DS as comfortable as possible so even as a toddler I made sure I always bought a pushchair that lay completely flat.

Maclaren XLR lies flatter than the XT and much lighter to push an older child around in.

Obaby vintage and the luna are also very good.

The Mothercare Urbanite looks quite funky although I haven't tried it.

MmeLindt · 09/02/2011 12:31

Does your DS often sleep when you are on the go?

My DC both did, for longer periods. I would not have used a buggy that did not recline for that reason.

We had a Chicco. It was great.

Galena · 10/02/2011 09:40

Love my Baby Jogger City Mini. It lies flat although I don't always recline it fully when DD (21mo) falls asleep, I do recline it quite a way. Love the way it folds and I love the way it doesn't become long and thin when folded.

nappyaddict · 10/02/2011 13:13

I think BJCM is only 150 degree recline?

BlueberryPancake · 10/02/2011 13:21

It's not just the recline, but can they sit up completely in the pram. Not important now but later on you will see that your DS will want to sit completely upright to see what's around. Recline is key especialy if you want him have naps in the buggy. Maclaren are the best I think.

nappyaddict · 10/02/2011 13:30

Quinny Zapp Xtra and Senzz recline I think and are quite small and compact :)

CakeJunkie · 10/02/2011 14:35

My BJCM goes fully flat. DS (9mo) will sleep in it when it's not at full recline, but he nods off easier when it's flat.

This comes in quite handy - if he's gone into overtired and whingey mode when we're out and about, I just stop and adjust the recline to flat (easy to do, even with DS in the pushchair at the time) and he's asleep within five mins.

nappyaddict · 10/02/2011 14:48

I don't think any buggy goes fully flat. I can't remember why but it's a safety thing and there has to be a slight incline even if it's only 5 degrees.

IAmTheCookieMonster · 10/02/2011 14:52

I have a mothercare whizzi, it reclines and I like it. Its the same price as one of the o'baby buggies but I found it easier to steer.

nappyaddict · 10/02/2011 15:05

Which Obaby one did you try?

IAmTheCookieMonster · 10/02/2011 15:38

I don't know which one it was, it was 90pounds in mothercare.

Galena · 10/02/2011 16:06

The BJCM claims to go 'near flat' on their website. And it is certainly marketed as being suitable from birth.

rusmum · 10/02/2011 18:33

another bjcm lover xxxxxx my 31st and final (and favourite) pushchair

Galena · 10/02/2011 19:28

31st?? How many DC do you have rusmum? I'm only on pushchair number 2.

trixymalixy · 10/02/2011 19:31

We bought a micralite, which was a mistake because it didn't recline. We ended up buying the toro as well which does recline.

The recline is very important IMHO.

rusmum · 10/02/2011 19:59

2 dd's and a ridiculous obsession x

Galena · 11/02/2011 08:03

Hehe, fair enough!
