Toddler Irrational Fears (that are sweet and funny)!

I read the other day that between two and three toddlers develop irrational fears. That certainly explains DD fear of seeing cake being squashed - I am not joking this seems to feature on a number of cartoons (yesterday it was Sean the Sheep) and as soon as she realises the cake is going to get it, she leaps up and runs into the other room!

I was wondering what other fears toddlers develop - and where they might come from?!

My sister was and still is scared of worzel gummage Hmm

MamaVoo · 05/02/2011 22:12

Rattling my DS was also terrified of Mr Pontipines moustache flying away when he was younger. Whenever I realised it was that episode I had to turn it off quickly or he'd get really upset.

AnaS · 05/02/2011 22:12

my 3 year old dd is petrified of the tooth fairy - a bit of a problem when she shares with her 6 year old sister who can't wait for the same to come tonight. had to negotiate with both and telephone the fairy (in front of her) to ask her to 'magic' the money to mummy and daddy and not come in the house.

Dh has just informed me that he was very scared of blimps as a child...despite only ever having seen one, he thinks, in a dream - never in real life.

My DS has an irrational fear of the moving bear that he loved when he was a baby. He really really really loved it as a baby, and then, just all of a sudden, he is terrified of him.

We hid him behind the sofa one time and forgot about him (away from ds, or so we thought). Then one day the bear (who sings Barry White's 'My Everything' when you press his paw) was activated when ds, being mischevious, decided to crawl under sofa and 'hide'. Ds pretty much shat himself and started screaming ...while Barry White sang away. Ds was stuck - couldn't get out, was in fact hysterical. I pulled the sofa back and ds shot out. He never cries when confronted with him, just kind of says 'put him back' and moves away, backwards.

Trying to introduce concept of going to nursery to ds, we had been having converstaions about nursery, so ds was getting excited - looking forward to going and all the activities. When I got his coat out of the cupboard to go view new nursery, the newly moved Barry White bear fell out of the cupboard at ds's feet. It was pretty funny to see him bargaining with Barry White.

'Am going to nursery Barry, ok??'

Bless him Grin

DS (3.7) - Balloons - I think DN's bursting them in front of him caused that one.

Wind and volcanoes getting inside the house, he has always been scared of the wind, which admittedly has been in large supply lately. Volcanoes, I haven't got a clue Confused

SkipToTheEnd · 05/02/2011 22:36

OP Never let your DD watch Simon Pegg and Nick frost 'cake flushing' on youtube.....My only thought was 'Noooo, what a waste of cake'!!

DancingThroughLife · 05/02/2011 22:36

I don't have a toddler yet, but Threelittleducks you have me in stitches. My sides are actually hurting from laughing. It reminds me of a singing christmas tree we had when we were younger and my brother would freeze, stuck to the spot coming down the stairs if someone had accidently switched it on. It would start singing and the eyes blinked - it absolutely filled him with horror. Bless. I'm imagining your DS's face to be just like my bro's Grin but Sad

4 yr old Ds

Jelly- meltdown and screams when given a bowl of jelly at a party today.

I knew he didn't like eating it... but this was a new reaction.

Wondering if it was

a- he dislikes the unpredictable nature of jelly. or
B there was dog at party house , DS dislikes dogs but was coping quite well with this one, perhaps he can cope with one scary thing at a time, but not 2.

BeatriceLaBranche · 05/02/2011 22:58

X posts Threelittleducks, that is so funny Grin. Poor DS.

Mine had a lullaby Winnie the pooh since he was born - every night he fell asleep to it. Just before he turned three he started screaming when it played and saying it was crying Shock

We had to shut it in the airing cupboard.

DH said the volcano fixation could be bloody Dora's fault (grrr)

Kewcumber · 05/02/2011 23:06

my ds (now 5) ws terrified of ice cubes Shock

LargeGlassofRed · 05/02/2011 23:11

Rattling! Snap dt2 19 months is terrified of the moustache ITNG!
I got a plastic moustache in a cracker and tried to reasure him by putting it on and pretending it was flying, it only made it worse, :-(

TryingVeryHard · 07/02/2011 12:04

My DS (2.5) starts crying when he hears music-box type of music - you know those cuddly toys that have either a little key or a string you pull, and they play this supposedly "calming" piano-type music?
Well DS seems to find that music so sad that his eyes fill up will with tears instantly and he needs a big long cuddle and lots of comforting... and if the music doesn't stop straight away he will be crying his eyes out like a terrible terrbile tragedy has happened!

coffeecake · 07/02/2011 20:52

Dd (6) is terrified of big kids (ie older children), she won't go near them and doesn't even want to look at them especially boys.
Although she faced her fear today, and she even had tea and played with her girlfriend's big brother!
She was extremely proud of herself after that!
Go Girlfriend!!!
Ds (3) is scared of monsters and the dark, and is not keen on enclosed spaces like soft play areas.

Hatescolds · 08/02/2011 19:25

my DD1 (3) is petrified of leaves- dead leaves on the ground, refuses to walk past them- is great fun in autumn!

ragged · 08/02/2011 19:35

At toddler group today, DS (almost 3) was frightened of the biscuits. They were square happy faces, filled with some kind of cream to make the eyes and mouth.

He overcame the fear enough to nibble on them, but decided they were vile-tasting anyway :).

bruffin · 08/02/2011 20:04

DD now 13 had a whole list of things to be terrified of when she was little

Theatre curtains - if we went to the theatre she would be extremely anxious of the theatre curtains or the stage. Thankfully once the show started she was fine.

Walking in woods - she hated the trees waving in the breeze above her.

Open windows at night time

The cow that was peering over the hedge at the beginning of Rosie and Jim.

She went through a stage of being frightened of heights, but I am so proud that she persisted and will do climbing and basically attempt anything now.

mumbar · 08/02/2011 20:19

DS (6). Most things Grin

Films - in case they're scary
New places - in case he doesn't like them
New food - but eats most things Hmm

Some most of it I'm sure is habit and/or attention but he does this arms in like chicken wings, wimpering and shaking whilst saying I'm scared. Ignore him though and he'll get over it. Grin

WimpleOfTheBallet · 08/02/2011 20:25

My DD hates seaweed and cat poop. I can han DH for the car poop fear as every time poor kids step on our front lawn he yells "Don't stand in the cat poop!" with such terror thatlittle DD obviously thinks it's going to bite her!

I have told him!

YankNCock · 08/02/2011 20:32

DS (17mo) is very startled by our animatronic George W Bush doll that spouts his most idiotic sayings. But that's probably not irrational Grin

scotlass · 08/02/2011 20:36

DS aged 21 months is scared of nothing......... that was till we got the family heirloom dancing santa out at christmas and my god he shot out the room! Quite funny seeing him wagging his finger and saying 'NO dancing santa!' Grin

His 12yr old DSis is terrified of everything, shrieks at a spider and DS waddles up saying spider, spider. Even if there isn't one - think he does it to take the mickey out of her

petisa · 08/02/2011 23:34

dirt and anything falling down, and the hoover

kreecherlivesupstairs · 09/02/2011 07:48

DD never had any fears until we moved to bangkok. We were exploring our road and I took her to the restaurant next door. The place had a tank full of fish and one flopped out onto the pavement. She was past hysterical (so was I TBH), it was compounded by one of the waiters picking it up and shoving it in her face.
She was quite happy to eat it about 15 minutes later though.

mamadiva · 09/02/2011 08:00

My DS used to be petrified of RazzleDazzle and Trug from bits n bobs on CBeebies.

He is now 4 and terrified of the dark, going down the plug and if I am using the blender downstairs in the kitchen he will run upstairs shutting every door behind him and sit under his duvet reading until I am done :o

I now have to fulfill all my blending needs when he is at nursery :o

nipplesofthenorth · 09/02/2011 08:02

Our eldest DS was terrified of slugs and his grandees friend who has a bug black beard and looks like Bluto from Popeye.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 09/02/2011 09:25

My DD is scared by those V-Tech toys that light up, play music and sing songs.

I'm quite pleased about that, actually, bloody things. Grin
