my 4.6 yr old boy does not know any colours. my father is colour blind and i believe he is too. i am actually a qualified teacher and he baffels me-yesterday we were doing an alphabet jigsaw and there was a picture of an orange and he tried to fit the word egg onto it- i showed him the picture of the very orange orange and the very pale pink egg and asked him to compare them and he thought they were the same.
he is articulate- has a very good memory, knows his letter sounds etc- isnt very bright as in reading or writing-but neither was i until i reached 7-but he doesnt know his colours- he knows the names but cannot even relate that the sun or daffodils are yellow or our car is red.
what could i do to help him?

Have you contacted your health visitor about this? It does sound like her is struggling with colours and maybe reads a referral to a specialist?

he already does see an optician- he has a slight squint and i have mentioned it to her. She is going to test him in may.
it just seems really odd.
i am going to buy a tube of smarties and see if he can sort them into piles of colours.
we played eye spy tonight..something that is green... white.. etc. he had no idea.
i informed school-prior to his admission in september.
are there any online test anywhere?
the health visitor is rubbish-i have had a lot of contact with her and to be honest she knows very little about children!

I have two colour blind boys. Your optician can test, but it's easier once he can recognise numbers. There's nothing that can be done to change how he sees the colours, just keep school aware and also, when he's a bit older, buy coloured pencils with the name of the colour on it. His doesn't sound just like classic colour blindness though, as white isn't normally a problem. Have a chat with your HV.

he just seems colour unaware?

try this
It will probably work better if you print it, unless your screen as a very good colour pattern. If he knows his number he can use the adult tests.

thank you will try him out tonight. maybe its some form of colour dyslexia-sounds silly but he really has no clue.
