Sons arguing. What works?

I'm officially at the end of my tether! My sons (10 and 8) argue RELENTLESSLY, and I'm at the stage of looking at radical solutions. I wondered whether any of you had tried and tested ways of keeping the peace, because I am fast running out of energy, resources and good humour.

I recommend a book called 'Everybody Wins - 150 Non-competitive Games for kids' by Cynthia MacGregor. If they can find activities/games to enjoy together there will be less conflict.

No advice, but keen to hear some. Same problems here. 7 and 5 year old boys.

Other tips: I use a timer on a string round my neck for 'fairness' in everything they do and we alternate turns at everything too (I have a note bk. to keep track of it all) All toys are 'ours' i.e. the whole family's and this is to reduce ownership issues....anyone can play with anything.
My boys are not allowed in each other's rooms without my permission - that way each has his own space to retreat to.
