4 year old boy won't stand up going to loo

i'm a single parent and my 4 year old boy (just turned 4) will not wee standing up.

I think because he doesn't see a man doing it standing up.

I've tried encouraging him loads, but now it's a problem as twice now he has wee all over the place sitting down.

What should I do?

don;t worry DS (now 5) still prefers to sit though he can stand if he wants to. Why is he weeing all over the palce if he sits down [confused}

My ds2 was like this..dad had firm thought on letting kids see him wee Grin. He got over it in the end on his own, when he grew tall enough not to pee down the outside. I simply reminded him too point "it" down between his legs till he started doing it standing up, but till then seeing his thighs look like a lake was frequent Grin.

I also had to remind DS to point his willy down but only a few times and its not a problme any more. I think he will switch to standing on his own when he sees his friends doing it. Nothing like peer pressure!

That's ok, it will come...and then you'll hate it as there will be wee all over the floor and you'll wish he was sitting down for a few more years!!

Just in case it's of any interest: in Germany it is very looked down upon for men to stand while weeing! Students have signs up all around their bathrooms saying that weeing standing up is not permitted. My brother in law and my husband (both German) get furious with my dad (English) who stands up. I've come round to their way of thinking and will definitely forbid my ds to wee standing up (except for outside, behind bushes, where I can see its efficacy!).

:)

Simic having been fed up with the mess, I asked my DS to sit down- they may stand up when they move into their own homes Smile

My grandson is 4 and he also refuses to stand up to wee. He has an older brother and younger brother and his Dad - who all stand to wee, but he insists on sitting.
My daughter doesn't seem bothered/concerned about it at all and says he will probably change as he gets older so I think she just lets him do it the way he prefers.
I wonder whether she should encourage him to stand or whether she is right not to make an issue of it ?

mousymouse · 02/02/2011 11:55

I prefer ds to sit down, much less messy. but he know to 'untange and push down' before weeing. :)

DS1 is six and has only recently started standing to wee, he used to say he wasn't sure if he was going to wee or poo so it was safer to sit down!
You need to remind him to point it down and open his legs when he wees.
