8mo doesn't seem to want to move anywhere!

I am a bit worried about 8mo dd. She has been able to sit up steady as a rock from 6 months, she never went through a wobbly weeble stage really and can reach from a sitting position to grab toys etc.

But she has only rolled over one way (to her left) about 5 times and has never rolled over to the right. If I put her on her tummy she will push her chest up with her arms but doesn't really try and move anywhere. She never tries to bum shuffle when she is sitting up.

She does love standing up if we hold her hands and will weight bear on her legs.

Could it be just that she doesn't fancy moving yet and will do it in her own time or should I mention it to hv?

Tia

Probably just doesn't want to move. If you're not concerned about her muscle tone (she can bear weight, can kick legs hard etc) then probably nothing to worry about. My dts didn't crawl until 13m and didn't walk until 22m.

aPixie · 31/01/2011 11:31

My ds1 did that. He sat up on his own the day he turned 7 months with no warning that he was going to do it. He also loved standing up and lived his jumperoo for this but otherwise he'd just sit there.

He crawled out of the blue at 9months, pulled himself to standing at 10months, cruised at 11 and started walking around 13 months so it all happened pretty quickly once he started crawling.

Only problem now is I can't get him to sit still for 2 minutes so don't worry and be happy knowing you can get on with things knowing your dd will be in the same spot when you get back. Grin

Hatescolds · 31/01/2011 12:41

My dd1 was the same, sat brilliantly from 6 months and then didn't roll over until 10 months and didn't crawl until 12 months, was quick to walk after that and was a steady walker by 14 months

think they do it all in their own time and i was never overly concerned about it but you could have a chat with your HV if you are worried.

I also think that children who sit early and amuse themselves well don't seem to have the desire to move !

tis a lot easier am hoping my dd2 is similar and then do not have to think about baby proofing for a bit longer!

Lizbertnobacon · 31/01/2011 15:01

Thanks all, I feel better now knowing it's not just her. I was just concerned because some of the other babies we know who are her age or younger are crawling and pulling themselves up to standing and my dd is just happy to sit and watch! I do think it might be because she feels happy sitting and can reach for what she wants she doesn't particularly like being on her tummy.
Like you say, I'll just enjoy not having to baby proof yet and being able to have a shower without tying her down!!

What are you expecting? Average age of crawling is 9 months, so I would enjoy the plonkability for now!

FlouryBap · 31/01/2011 15:27

Just to add to the other stories, my DD1 was the same. she sat up exactly at 6 months and was great at standing up but went no where. At 12 months I took her to the doctor as my family have funny hips but they said she was fine. She eventually walked at 15 months, crawled after that (!) and rolled over at 16 months (!). so in the end she walked at a pretty average time, but skipped out all the other bits. We use to have to set her going a toy as she couldn't get up to walking by herself.

DD2 is 15 months, has been crawling since 10 months but shows no interest AT ALL in walking by herself

Lizbertnobacon · 31/01/2011 16:43

Sleep - it's more the rolling over that I was a bit concerned about because most of the babies at the groups we go to have been rolling over at 4/5 months and dd seems to be completely uninterested in going anywhere, even to reach a toy.
Floury - thanks, it's good to know dd is not the only one who likes doing things in her own good time!

My DS is also 8 months and is kinda crawling commando style but he's still not that good at sitting, at least i don't think he is because he will never sit for even a minute without trying to move about. I was the opposite to you being worried about him not being able to sit well, but from what i have seen of other babies the same age seems they fall generally into the two categories- either being better at sitting or better at moving. I think everyone worries when they compare their DC to others the same age as you tend to notice what they are not doing more.

pearlgirl · 31/01/2011 19:50

My ds is 9 months and I was also about to post as he rolls a bit, has been sitting since 5 months and shows no interest in moving and I had started to get a bit worried - I do know they do things at their own pace and that one day he will be off and then I'll be chasing him everywhere. It is reassuring that others also have the same experience.

Pterosaur · 31/01/2011 20:04

My DD1 hated going onto her tummy, and at 8 months was sitting in stately splendour, not going anywhere, until she flopped forward onto her hands and knees and back a few times, then crawled away. Two months later, she was walking.

They all go at their own pace, and devise their own methods for getting started. If she can bear her weight on her legs, she's unlikely to have problems getting about when she's ready.

cheerypip · 01/02/2011 21:47

My DD has just turned 10 mths and is still showing no desire to crawl - quite mobile in terms of rolling over and back, or rotating around on her tummy or pushing herself backwards, and a little bit of bum shuffling, but basically she is very happy to sit and play with whatever is around her.

To be honest, we are in the middle of building work so I haven't been encouraging her to get mobile yet and am hoping she will take after her daddy who didn't crawl until almost 12 months old!!

Lovethesea · 01/02/2011 21:56

I have the opposite problem, DS never stops rolling, commando crawling, sliding backwards on the wooden floors .... but can't sit for a second without pitching straight over sideways. DS is nearly 8 months.

So I would also not be surprised to hear that some sit so well they are happy to observe the world while others roll all over it and can't sit.

My MIL says her oldest boy never moved. She would sit him in the middle of the floor, go do housework and come back to find him sitting in the same spot. He went on to be an engineer so I think he was just musing.

AngelDog · 01/02/2011 23:05

My friend's DS rolled once at 3 months, and by 10 months hadn't repeated it, or started crawling. He crawled, stood and walked all within a week at 10 months. Shock

For my DS, pushing up on the arms when on the tummy came surprisingly shortly before attempts to crawl - I thought it'd take longer.

lovethesea, that's exactly what my MIL says about DH and he was an engineer too!

Onetoomanycornettos · 01/02/2011 23:05

My dd1 never rolled at all, she had some neck problems which probably didn't help, but she was just a solid sitter who liked sitting and reaching out. She did crawl eventually, but I don't think not rolling is a big developmental issue, you could always check with the HV though.

ThisIsYourSong · 02/02/2011 07:25

I know you've already been reassured Smile but just to note that rolling over isn't a developmental milestone as not all babies do it.

If anyone is worried about hips, when we asked the paediatrician about it he said to do a basic check, you can see if the creases are the same/in the same place on each leg. Obviously this is for older babies who have developed creases, not young babies.

sunndydays · 02/02/2011 10:04

My DD is seven and a half months can only sit for a few seconds and can't roll or crawl...it makes me worry she has CMT like me :( but hearing others stories makes me think maybe she is just laid back :)

Lizbertnobacon · 02/02/2011 12:03

I never knew rolling over wasn't a developmental milestone, I feel much better knowing that thanks!
I now have something to fire back at the mums at baby group who are very quick to say 'ooh is she still not moving'.
At least I don't have to pin her down to change her nappy yet though Grin

DD sat at 6 months. And sat there for a few months. She shuffled along at 10.5 months. And rolled at 11.5 months.

Walked at 15 months and is now 5 and moves totally normally Smile.

DS on the other hand rolled at 4.5 months, sat at 7.5 months, crawled at 8.5 months, cruised at 9 months.....and then walked at 15 months. He is 7 and also moves normally Smile.

CinnabarRed · 02/02/2011 16:23

DS1 (now 3.2) and DS2 (9m) were/are identical to your LO as described in your original post.

DS1 didn't roll or crawl until after he could walk (which he did at 14 months).

DS2 sits happily amusing himself with toys like a beautiful fat buddah. Will reach but won't roll or crawl. If I move a toy out of his reach he starts playing with his toes instead! Hates being on his front, has never rolled from back to front (will roll from front to back with much wailing). He has very strong legs, his greatest pleasures in life are standing and bouncing, and he is just starting to walk holding onto our fingers rather than just standing IYKWIM.

Katy1368 · 03/02/2011 07:04

Don't worry - 8 months is way too young to start worrying - mine didn't even sit unsupported until 9 months. My DD didn't move 1 inch until she was 13 months not one flippin' inch I tell you! The comments I had to shrug off were numerous - ignore them all. She didn't pull up until at least 15-16 months or stand on her feet properly when supported. She never crawled just bottom shuffled really really fast - you may have a bottom shuffler on your hands and they always walk later because 1. They can transport things around in one hand unlike crawlers who need both hands to crawl and 2. They need to learn how to get in a position to push themselves up using their arms - exactly the crawl position! She started a really pathetic half crab crawl about 19months (whilst all her younger peers walked around her!) then - bang! 0 at 20 months she just did it and was running, jumping, hopping, skipping within a week. Now age 3 she is exactly where she should be.

Honestly some babies just take their time - my daughter has been like that all along, she will only do it when she is damn well ready and when she knows she can do it really properly - love her!
