Does your 7 / 8 year old ds like programmes like Octonauts?

We don't watch much tv and I am wondering if my son's choices are likely to get him teased if he mentions them to his friends. He's allowed to go on the CBeebies website to watch videos at weekends and he gets very excited about watching Octonauts, he also likes Timmy and Chuggington which I am pretty sure are for younger children. I don't suppose this is a big problem, but just wanted to know for sure what your average 7 or 8 year old would be watching!

CBeebies are set up for pre-school/reception children (as a guideline). However, I know older children, including mine, who still watch it. My ds2 who is 7.5 loves Lazy Town and asks me to record it for him as it's on when we leave for school. He does comment that CBeebies is for 'babies' though and doesn't watch anything else on it. He's moved on to CBBC and seems to enjoy most of their progammes. Have you tried him with CBBC? 'Deadly 60' etc.....

TwistAndShout · 30/01/2011 13:51

My DS is 6 and loves Octonauts, as do his brothers (4 and 18 months). We moved house a year ago an now only have cbeebies, which I'm pleased about. Before that they did like
Ben 10, but they can't watch it now!

vacamoni · 30/01/2011 13:54

Thank you for responses - I don't know about CBBC, he gets scared quite easily and I don't usually know what the programmes are like myself, so I want him to only have access to things that are going to be non-scary. Plus little brother watches at the same time so older stuff may not be appropriate?

He is really enjoying the programmes but I worry what the reaction will be if he mentions to friends!

Ds1 still loves most Cbeebies programmes, including "In the Night Garden", "Tellytubbies" and Alphablocks. However, I should point out that he has ASD and is very young for his age.

skydance · 30/01/2011 21:05

My 7 year old happily watches octonauts and chuggington (they are some of his favourites) and other cbeebies programmes and he likes going on the cbeebies website he has a 3 year old brother so we do have a mixture of ben 10 type channels and cbeebies they are both happy to watch both and I do tend to put cbeebies on more than the others.

I know he does tend not to mention that he watches cbeebies at school though.

skydance · 30/01/2011 21:07

I have just noticed that he has a younger brother so much the same as my house then, I bet a lot of the children with younger siblings still watch cbeebies.

Oodle · 31/01/2011 13:39

My 8 year old DS loves Octonauts! He has a younger brother too. He did mention the other day that his friends at school teased him when he told them he liked it, but he didn't seem too bothered. He also watches lots of other stuff though - CBBC, Scooby Doo, Chowder, Phineus and Ferb. His 4 year old brother watches it with him so he's viewing stuff that's 'too old' for him.

GooseyLoosey · 31/01/2011 13:43

My dcs (6 and 7) would not sit down and watch cebeebies any more. However, they would happily watch Charlie & Lola and Chuggington. They have never seen Octonauts. Dd (6) in particular finds much of the CBBC offering unpalatible. She does not like programmes about zapping aliens/monsters or children with aliens/monsters. Doesn't leave too much left to watch.

rickymummy · 31/01/2011 13:54

My 7 year old, who is quite mature in many ways, absolutely loves Octonauts!

His viewing ranges from Octonauts, Mr Maker, Total Wipeout, the grownup Brian Cox programmes about Space and anything historical.

It's basically CBeebies or BBC 4 in our house at the moment.

Eveiebaby · 31/01/2011 20:48

I guess it depends on the individual child but I think Cbeebies age range of programmes are generally for children up to 7/8 years old. Obviously not every programme will be suitable for a 7 year old in the same way not every programme will be suitable for a 2 year old!!!!

mackereltaitai · 31/01/2011 20:57

exactly what rickymummy said - my 7-year-old loves Octonauts and so do all his mates, and so do I Smile - and we love Ooglies too, and c&L.

We do love the comedy on CBBC, esp Sorry I Don't Have a Head and Horrible Histories, but also Gigglebiz on CBeebies.

Takver · 31/01/2011 22:29

If he likes Timmy he might really like Shaun the Sheep on CBBC :)

Its my favourite programme on the telly too Grin

WimpleOfTheBallet · 31/01/2011 22:34

I asked a similar thing last night! My DD is 6 and a half and love Peppa Pig and other toddler type things...it's fine! Some of these shows have quite toungue in cheek humour...I like Timmy, Peppa and Ben and Holly!

Dancergirl · 31/01/2011 22:36

My nearly 10 year old dd still likes a bit of cbeebies but she does have younger sisters (8 and nearly 4). They like Charlie and Lola, Nina and the Neurons, Grandpa in my pocket, Gigglebiz.

Yes he probably will be teased. My 2 older dds keep quiet at school about what they watch. Children can be horrible about this sort of thing.

StuffingGoldBrass · 31/01/2011 22:39

I was just thinking the same about my 6 year old DS who loves the Octonauts, Chuggington and Gigglebiz. AFAIK he's not been teased about it at school, possibly because he loves Dr Who as well and probably talks about that more.

cece · 31/01/2011 22:41

My 7 year old hasn't watched cebeebies for about 2 years.

He prefers programmes on CBBC.

However, I sometimes catch him watching the odd programme with DS2 Wink

allbie · 01/02/2011 14:14

When our DD2 was 7, she used to get up earlier than her older siblings to watch cbeebies in peace at the weekend. They are still little at that age! She wouldn't have given two hoots who knew about her love of cbeebies at school.

jendifa · 01/02/2011 16:45

I teach a year 3/4 class and have never heard any of them mention watching cbeebies. Its always CBBC or Nickleodeon. Surely you could watch some CBBC with him,so if he is scared you could discuss it with him?

StuffingGoldBrass · 01/02/2011 21:38

Actually I think it's rather sad that a kid should have to stop doing something s/he enjoys because s/he might get teased at school.
Surely it's never too early to teach DC that other people are not necessarily right, and that it's OK to do something you like whatever other people think when it's something harmless like preferring one TV programme to another.

Tryharder · 01/02/2011 23:54

My DS1 (6) will quite happily watch anything on Cbeebies. DS2 who's 2 wants to watch Ben 10, Harry Potter, Ice Age, Action Man and Scooby Doo. It's all very bizarre.

I think DS1 pretends to be into Batman and Spiderman at school though Hmm
