Should I be worried?

DS has just turned 17 months and isn't walking yet. He is a very speedy crawler, crawls up and down stairs at speed, climbs onto furniture and cruises a lot but just isn't walking. He is at a very good nursery who say there is no need to worry as he is very steady on his legs when standing and cruising and clearly is just enjoying crawling. Otherwise his development seems normal too - chats away, very good understanding, good motor skills otherwise (eg. very good at building towers). I have to admit that I'm beginning to obsess about it though. Other people keep seeming shocked that he isn't walking yet and I'm terrified that there is something wrong.

I personally did not start walking until I was nearly 19 months. I wouldn't worry about it if he is cruising fine and strong on his legs.

Catfan, our DSs are identical in age and mine isn't walking either. Really, really don't worry. It's one of those skills (unlike talking) that once he's done it, he's done it, and you'll forget within 5 minutes you were ever worried. I know what you mean though as you see lots of other, much smaller children toddling away merrily!

Will he walk while holding your hands? Mine has just in the past two weeks started to enjoy doing that but it was a sudden change - before then he was just happy crawling. We now make a game of getting him to take steps between us (while holding a hand).

I didn't walk until 18 months and I'm great at it now.

My friend's son also didn't walk until about 18m, and grew up to be a county champion sportsman. He was also really slow to learn to ride a bike though - wonder if there's an element of caution there? Neither of my two were late to walk, but the one who started earlier is the headbanger risk-taker of the two.

Thanks for your helpful replies. Ds will walk with hands although I can't say he is overly keen and yes, he is quite cautious. Dislikes hurting himself and is quite considered in his movements. Any more opinions very welcome.
