Cow & gate 'comfort' formula: any good?

Hi there.

My poor ds has horrible colic. Was wondering if anyone has tried cow & gate comfort formula and if it was any good? If not any suggestions?

Any help gratefully received. :-)

Are you currently FF or BF?

When my daughter was a baby she was formula fed as wouldnt take to the breast and we ended up putting her on Comfort formula on recommmendation of hv and it did help her quite a bit. This was nearly 5 yrs ago though.

Have you tried Dr Browns bottles, they made all the difference when mine had Colic.
also tried a couple different fomulas with DC3 before we found one that he was happy with, the comfort milk didn't suit him.
Anyway good luck.

We put DS on Comfort as he really struggled with normal formula. It took US a while to get used to the thickness of it but he took to it straight away. We've just taken him off it at 8mths. He's now much happier.

Before we tried it we tried colief drops and all the other colic bits but none really were right. The comfort milk seemed to really suit him. When we were out we took the formula in a pot and a flask of hot water to mix with and some cold to stand it in to cool i tas it doesn't come ready made up but we soon got used to the faff.

It is quite thick so you would need a faster teat and it does separate out in the bottle if its left for any time (2hrsmax) so does need shaking but this is because of the ingredients.

Hope that helped.

Forgot to say. He was on Dr. Browns with it too as these didn't help on their own. They were great for DD2 though with just normal formula.

Thanks for answers, ladies.

I am using the dr brown bottles- they made a difference at first I think but he seems to be getting a bit worse at the mo. I think his reflux meds are playing havoc with his lower workings.

What formula did your ds end up on usedtobeyoung?

Dizzymac- did it loosen his stools a lot? My ds already has trouble with over-loose ones, so don't want to aggravate it...

DS had bad colic we had him on aptamil comfort with infacol dose in the bottle too. The doctor said to put them in the bottle as it gets rid of any bubbles.
Worked a treat. Didn't make his stools too runny either.
Hth

pipplin · 28/01/2011 09:38

Oh and we could still use teat size 1 with this but it did separate after 2 hours.

usedtobeyoung · 28/01/2011 09:58

Its the same for us, on the comfort ds3 was far too loose.
He is ok with the regular cow & gate now but we tried hipp, sma, actimel and actimel comfort first.
DS2 had a lot of problems with colic, reflux, loose stools as well as constipation, he turned out to have a milk allergy. Is that a possibility with your DS?
reflux and cows milk allergy really seem to go together.

dizzymac · 28/01/2011 14:19

When he was on Colief they were yellow and very runny. They were firmer on the Comfort but not firm if you know what I mean. They were green thoughHmm

Yes, Usedtobeyoung i have been thinking he might suffer with that. Thinking of trying goats milk formula... Which one did your little one end up on? Was it a dairy free one?

He is on Neocate, its prescription only.
Must say he turned from a grumpy little thing to all smiles when we switched to it.
His consultant said that goats and soy milk aren?t usually suitably for cow?s milk allergy sufferers.
It?s worth asking your GP for a referral to an allergy clinic, though the waiting time can run into months. The GP can prescribe it without the clinic if they want, though they often don?t.
How is his skin?

EBDteacher · 29/01/2011 19:58

We use aptamil comfort and tomee tipee colic bottles.

Really helped DS when we switched to comfort- I would say definitelyworth a try.

WikiSpeaks · 29/01/2011 20:16

We used this for our DS. It really helped.

We also had Dr Browns bottles.

Stirred the powder (not shaken) and served it lukewarm.

I really feel for you - it's awful.

pleasantlyoutofdepth · 03/02/2011 14:28

Thank you all so much for your advice :)

Have yet to try it as am on my own for very long stretches and he won't be put down anywhere without screaming the place down, so have been a bit chicken and continued with the ready made till my dh is around more next week.

We'll give it a go then... (is there an emoticon for 'intrepid'?)
