Got my little boy weighed today and got his weight measured and head measured. He's been following the 50th centile nicely for his weight. His hight has increased a little but his head has gone up from 25th centile to 98th centile since birth. The hv said to bring him back every 4 weeks to mointer it and asked if he was smiling, following me with his eyes, turning his head to sounds etc - which he is. She said not to worry, they can always refer me to someone if there is a problem.

I'm confused / worried - what does it mean if his head is growing faster (to look at him it doesnt look 'big'). Who might she refer me to? I dont know what there mointering for :S help!

I think that they may be concerned about encephaly -water on the brain given that the head seems to be growing faster than the rest of his body.

We had this with DC and saw a lovely paed a couple of times who was unconcerned. He did what we should have done and measured mine and DH's heads - DH has a HUGE head and so does DS.

I think that this can be serious but if your DS is developing well, then a referral will be on a "better safe than sorry" basis. Also babies are very wiggly - so she may not have got the measurement exact and a few millimetres can make a difference.

Please keep getting it measured and try not to worry.

Before you and your midwife worry, do get her to check with another tape measure. I'm not saying there is no cause for concern but using an old, stretched tape measure can create problems! The first reading could have been wrong also.

My kids had massive heads and one MW ran around making notes and ringing specialists. Then an experienced MW came in and said 'we'll just check it with another tape, shall we?' and sure enough it was them that were 'out' not the head...

stop googling, it probably just means he has a bit of a big head

Stop googling! My Ds and DH both have huge heads - some people do! They are just being cautious.

Same as the others - our DS's head was at one point off the scale! But then DH ad I are both big of bonce too
