Whats normal for a 2 and a half year old talking wise? Second child with much older sibling. Feeling i should be doing more reading than i am.

Huge range of normal. My niece is 2 and a half, says a few things, joins the odd words, no concept of pronouns, prefers to point than ask etc.

At 2 and a half my dd spoke fluently and was completely understood by everybody.

Most children fall somewhere in the middle. Just talk to your child. Read too but talk all the time, chat, enjoy them.

Should your post read not talking?

Is your child talking at all?

Firawla · 22/01/2011 18:30

my 2 and a half talks i would say fluently, but sometimes other people are not sure what he is saying, because some pronunciation is a bit off, but he talks a lot in sentences etc.
i know children his age who hardly talk though, and others who talked much more clearly and better pronounced
see if you can talk to a speech and language therapist at just in a drop in, they come to children's centre stay and plays, and they will be able to reassure you whether he seems within normal level or not and give you some tips if there's anything that seems relevant.
with the reading do you do any at bedtime? i find it easier at that time of day, less distractions so easier for them to sit in one place and concentrate, also becomes part of the routine then so automatically makes time for it daily?

If your child is not talking at 2 and1/2 then run, don't walk, to the gp.

Ive had 2 slow talkers!

At 2.5yrs DD2 and DS both were saying odd words, but not joining them to form sentances.

We had the HV check DD2 at almost 3yrs old who did a test on her and said she was borderline for speech therapy, but would check again in 3 months.

In that time she started nursery and suddenly everything clicked for her, she was off, and hasnt shut up since!

DS was 3 at the end of november, and again, just started nursery 2 weeks ago. The difference already after only 2 weeks is amazing in his speech.

As far as I know, speech therapy isnt usually suggested until age 3 anyway.

Good luck

Speech therapy tajes bloody ages to access so it is worth getting your concerns noted as early as possible.

And slt is one of those things which is more effective the sooner it is started.

And my comments were if a child wasn't talking at all, not ' saying odd words'.

Ds2 had no words at 2 1/2 and at 14 still has very very little language. I wish I had been pushy sooner and not listened to the ' give it a few months and hevwill be chattering away' people. And the Einstein didn't talk till he was 6 people

There is a normal range but it is not infinitely wide. If the child is not combining words by two. Get it checked. You will not be wasting anyone's time. You would not wait and see if the child had a rash and a high temperature. Fearing that there is something more serious wrong will not make the problems go away and as pagwach says the earlier the help the better the results

Also important to remember speech therapy is not a magic wand if there are underlying reasons for failure of speech to emerge. More specialist help may be needed and you need to research where to find it
