Fifteen month old not yet walking.

Hi out there can anyone put my mind at ease. My Fifteen month old will not walk. She had a set back in November with the Chicken Pox which zonked her totally for nearly two weeks and then shortly after had Gastro.
She is a happy little girl, full of smiles and a great sleeper and eater. She is in nursery full time as I am mature student at Uni. She can be clingy but settles very quickly, however due to not walking she is losing all her little friends as they are being moved to the next level as 'wobblers' I am worried about her. Any ideas?

Don't worry. From what you say she seems to be happy and developing well.

Some little ones seem to develop in certain areas before other areas... like perhaps your daughter babbles, laughs is aware of her emotions more, some are 'gifted' in building towers, some are the fastest crawlers in the world, some walk and never crawl.. etc....

She'll do it but when she's ready. Her seeing the others at nursery may worry you but it might spur her on?

My cousin was over 2yrs before she moved off her bottom and walked. Nothing at all wrong with her - just didn't.

Don't worry about her peer group. Your daughter sounds lovely.

My son didn't walk until he was was nearly 17 months. 15 months isn't that old to not be walking.

SleepWhenImDead · 21/01/2011 12:53

I used to see 15 month olds as part of my job, I'd say at least a quarter weren't walking - very very normal.

Thanks guys you have helped. In every other way she is doing great, was just concerned about the whole walking thing particularly with nursery. Just do not want her getting upset as feel bad enough about leaving her.She does crawl, she does play really well. Makes a host of noises and understands well enough. Will have to be patient.

My niece didn't walk until nearly 20 months! Of course they worried constantly but she was a tiny wee thing and just took off!

The only thing I would say is to have a check yourself for uneven skin folds on her legs. My daughter had a dislocated hip and i would be conscious that this can affect walking. Am sure she is fine but some other ways of checking are
1)if you lie her flat on her back and push her legs down flat on the floor, just check to see if her legs are the same length.

2)lie her on her back and bring her two knees up to her chest, they should be even.

Hope this helps

My youngest didn't walk until about 15 and half months...when she did it was in Homebase. I lifted her out of the buggy because she was complaining and stood her on her feet while I was looking at the colour charts. Before I knew it she was off walking down the aisle. She was so good in fact that I'm convinced she must have been doing it for weeks in secret Grin

Do not worry Smile Smile

My DS2 is 16 months at the end of jan and has only started walking independently in the last couple of weeks. Like Durham's DD, he just got up and walked off into the kitchen (and round a corner!) I was totally chuffed as DS1 was walking at 13 months so I had been a little worried. I think it's like speech, some kids don't do anything and then it just takes off. You definitely have nothing to be worried about!

ladylush · 21/01/2011 13:19

durhamdurham - that is hilarious Grin Can just imagine your jaw dropping Grin

itsuptome - dd is 18mo and not walking. She stands for quite long periods of time and moves around holding on to furniture but she tends to stand on her toes and will not be able to walk unless her feet are more flat. We are taking her to see a paediatrician because of this to see whether she might need some physio. Of course, it is possible that she just needs more time but we worry more because she was born prematurely. The parameters for developmental milestones are blurred for premature babies and it's tricky to know when to be concerned. Have you spoken to the health visitor/gp? I think it's pretty normal for babies of your dds age to not be walking. When she is zooming around the place you'll probably wonder why you ever worried Grin

My ds only just started walking at 20 months! It is worrying. Hang on in there! X

Summerbird73 · 21/01/2011 13:25

DS started walking at 17.5mo

like you i worried - now he is 19mo i cant keep up with him Grin

Species8472 · 21/01/2011 17:51

My DD is still not really walking at 18m. She cruises everywhere, stands and is now sometimes taking a couple of stumbling steps, but that's it. Am not too worried, she was a fairly late crawler, but is very bright and vocal. I'm fed-up of people asking about it tbh, but I'm sure she'll start doing it properly soon.

Don't worry, 15m is well within the 'normal' parameters, but I know it feels so frustrating when all your friends' babies are already walking.

undercovamutha · 21/01/2011 17:54

Both my DCs started walking just after 15mo. Had thought DS would be earlier as he started crawling 2 months earlier than DD did, but no!

Don't worry - I'm sure its perfectly normal.

merryberry · 21/01/2011 19:18

ds1 didn;t walk until properly nearly 2, didn't start trying until about 29 months.

Tgger · 21/01/2011 19:29

Don't worry- completely normal. DD didn't walk until 18 months. And although it'll take her a while to get used to new children, probably not as long as you think as they don't really have "friends" as such at this age Smile.

Itsuptome · 21/01/2011 20:56

This has put my mind at ease somewhat. At least now I know she is in the 'normal' range. :)

My daughter was 18 months, in fact, all my children were late walkers.

megonthemoon · 21/01/2011 23:11

My DS was 17 months. Big advantage was he was much sturdier than early walkers so once he got up and walked that was it - hardly any bumps and bruises as he was physically much stronger so rarely fell.
