I'm an SLT. I agree with previous poster - has he had a hearing test? Is he using single words OP? Children never say words when asked, it just doesn't happen so don't worry! Can he ask for things like milk/banana/biscuit/whatever using their names? Can he get something from another room, like 'go get your shoes' or 'go get your coat'?

his hearing is brilliant, my health visitor said he will talk in his won time but im still worried. he understands everything i say to him and will get things when asked b ut just wont say anything unless i ask him to

I have a 2 year old (in 2 weeks anyway) and he is only just beginning to use single words. He understands everything I say and responds to simple commands and sometimes (when he feels like it!) he will sit on my lap and repeat words after me.

My DD was about the same age when she started as well, ans now at 3.6 I can't get her to shut up Hmm

At 2 my ds was not saying much except individual words - I was a little concerned because he was so much 'slower' in this respect than his siblings. Now at 2y8mo he's coming on well - not talking in sentences but certainly putting words together. He understands just about everything I say to him. If you're happy that his hearing is okay then try not to worry too much - they really are all different. Having experienced ds in the last year, what you're describing sounds within the bounds of 'normal'. hth.

ds loves looking at picture books with me and will name things in the pictures. This helps build his vocab obv and hopefully one day he will just click about putting words together effectively.

How does he communicate ? Will he point and gesture normally ? Will he readily share attention with you?
