Making him (and me) sick!

My 20-month-old baby constantly has his hands in his mouth and down his throat, leading inevitably to his making himself sick. He won't keep a dummy in or any other kind of teething toy as an alternative. Do you have any suggestions about what to do? It's disheartening to watch him bring bm and purees up after trying so hard to feed him.

Not sure of what you can do to stop him doing this but the fact you've said he's still on just bm and purees (and that you're having to try hard to feed him) at 20 months makes me a little concerned. I'm not trying to be nasty, but why is he still on purees? Does he not cope with other textures or have you not tried him on them?

If he doesn't like/can't cope with other textures maybe it's a sensory issue - might be worth talking over with GP. If it's simply because it's easier to keep him on purees then maybe he's simply searching for other textures to explore with his mouth and makes himself sick accidentally.

How often is he sick?

Stupid me! I mean 20 weeks!

Maybe he's sick cos he's not ready for the purees yet?
Has he always been sick- got some reflux? Should grow out of it soon- by 6 months hopefully.

That's more reassuring! And yes - maybe he's not ready for purees yet. Did he do this before you started weaning him? Maybe he's teething? With DD we kept giving her little toys (obviously not too little!) and eventually she found one she preferred to her fingers.

She loved (and still does at 21 mo) chewing on the men from this.

Good luck!

He's always done this, with milk or solids. It's not the food; it's the fact that he puts his fingers (and fists!) in his mouth, with the end result that he's repeatedly sick. He won't accept any substitute at the moment. Any ideas?

My dd who is 8 weeks does this... I keep trying to just take her hands out of her mouth and either hold them or play with her but nothing works... She is not into toys yet, but that is a great idea! She won't take a dummy, and starts sucking her thumb but she thinks it us not big enough, lol so then adds more fingers till nearly her whole hand is in her mouth :-s

Sorry to gatecrash and I have no words of wisdom but very interested in responses and letting you know that I think that although it is horrid it us also kind of normal!

Let's hope there are more great ideas...
