climbing/falling out of cots

one minute i could hear 16 mo ds chuntering away next door, the next there was an almighty crash. he had managed to climb out of cot where the sides come up to his shoulders and had gone flying on to floorboards covered only by thin rug. it was a hell of a crash but fortunately he was more shocked than hurt.

we acquired the cot from my sil who bought it in the states so it is pretty huge - and high. i was hoping he would be in it for ages yet but now he has managed to climb out i'm worried he will keep trying (i don't know how on earth he did it but he is incredibly strong).

is this the end for the cot and i will have to move him to a low bed? do i pad the area around the cot to break his fall next time? not sure what to do, so any advice would be gratefully received ...

I'm afraid I had to move DS at 13 months as he was standing on the cot rails and launching himself Superman Stylee onto the floor! Get a full sized single bed, put it against a wall and a long bed guard.

He will get out of it continually for three days. Just put him back in. He will get the idea. And make sure he runs around a lot so he is properly tired when you put him to bed. We found getting a duvet with Thomas on helped DS stay in bed because he talks to Thomas Hmm Wink

Oh and DD did the same about 16 months and the bars were taller than her shoulders! It's about upper body strength I think. Some kids are v strong (I reckon they probably practice for an hour at 3am to surprise us). Grin

oh dear - 13 months is terribly young for that kind of malarkey! another cot incident yesterday - he rammed his leg through the bars and got it wedged. memo to self: keep saw handy (for the cot bar that is, not his leg Grin
