Bepanthon is supposed to be the best, nappy free time whenever at home will help tho shame its winter months

foxy123 · 14/01/2011 14:56

I used talcum powder powder it does the job SO well, give it a go

I've been changing nappies for 17 years now and the best product I've ever used is Metanium. When it got really bad with DD1 (and I mean really bad) I used to put her in terry nappies without plastic covers. The moment she did a wee I would wash her bottom with water and put on a dry one. That worked a treat but would only work if you were at home and could give her lots of attention.

I second Metanium. Just cleaning with cotton wool and water and making sure it's thoroughly dry before applying the cream. Soreness will be gone in 48hrs max.

JamieLeeCurtis · 14/01/2011 18:05

I third Metanium

DBIL (paediatric nurse) says they use it on the wards

I never got on with sudocrem myself. But i used bepanthen and i found it worked well.

Metanuim is magic - mix it with some Sudocrem to make it go one smoother.

IMO if your babies bottom is really sore Aqueous cream is the best thing to use. Apply it as a nappy/barrier cream, but also use it as a soap, with warm water and cotton wool or a muslin, instead of baby wipes (which are often the cause of nappy rash). You can also use it instead of baby bath (put a large blob in your hand and run under the tap, while the bath is running, then swish around to create baubles). You can buy it from any chemist and some supermarkets.

Bepanthan is very good, not too strong and easy to clean off.

I agree that Metanium is also great, although no not suited to every babies skin. To clean Metanium off, use a couple of drops of olive oil (or other oil) on a cotton wool ball.

DD can suffer with sore bum.

We always use a muslin to dry her after using wipes/wet cotton wool and then use Bepanthan. As others have said regular nappy free time is also really good.

DD reacted to Metanium, apprently the metal in it can upset some babies skin.

mummywizz · 15/01/2011 22:36

definately metanium, and make sure the skin is clean and very dry before applying it and then only use a little bit spread very thinly over the area

DHisinthepub · 15/01/2011 22:49

Metanium lightly applied and then slather sudocrem on over the top as a barrier to the next wee/poo. I read this on a MN thread ages ago and now I do it at the first hint of a sore bum and it works wonders.

i had similar problem recently, my daughter has such sore bum that it had went red raw & slightly blistered.

we applied mixture of the previous mentioned things to make it better.

Changed nappies as regularly as possible. After dirty nappy bathed her in water with some oilatum. Made sure bum was completely dry before putting on another nappy. Used Bepanthan cream. Stopped using wet wipes. When it was really bad used aqueous cream to clean her instead of water and then used gauze swabs with water.

Am with the others on Metanium - it has cleared up any bit of nappy rash that either of my DC have had.

Apart from one time DD had what I thought was very bad nappy rash, sore, pimply - horrible; after over a week of nothing working, I thought it might be thrush and took her to the Docs. She gave me a prescription for Timodene (sp..?) which worked a treat, you have to keep on using it for about a fortnight even if the symptoms disappear immediately, but it's never come back since.

The doc didn't tell me to carry on using it for the fortnight, but my HV did.

We changed the brand of nappies - Nature Baby worked, when every normal disposable (and cloth ones) made him sore. I think their green claims are rubbish, tbh, because they use the same gel as all the rest and they're still disposables, but they don't have plastic outers, and I think that plus the gel (so not damp, like the cloth ones) was what did the trick.

I also find Neals Yard baby barrier cream really good. I use it on eczema as well.

What are your baby's stools like? Mine periodically has very loose stools and that always results in a sore bum. The soreness doesn't go until the stools get firmer. By trial and error I realised that the yummy cheese, lentil and carrot wedges I was making her were causing the runny nappies (with effects that last for about a week) - presumably the lentils are the culprit. I've cut lentils out of her diet (most annoying, I've got heaps of those wedges in the freezer...) and no sore bottoms yet. Just a thought, it might b something similar with you?

anonnyme · 17/01/2011 08:52

You could try a tiny bit of Canesten, My DS2 had a horrible sore bum for ages & the Dr said he thought it might be thrush & gave the Canesten & it cleared right up! Thrush is meant to thrive in warm, moist places so I suppose it makes sense.

If it's just a normal nappy rash then Bepanthan has always worked well with all my 3. Smile
