Asperger's Syndrome

My ds is 5 and after many many problems at school we went to see a child behavioral pychologist as advised this morning where after a very long discussion she said she and other people that have asessed our ds over the last few months feel that it is more than likely he will be diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome i dont know much about this other than its a form of autism - how bad is it? - how do i help him? i feel really sad for him, i dont know what im supposed to do from here

Oh Helenemjay, i don't know what to say and don't want to revert to cliches, but also didn't want to let your post go without saying something. The ladies on the SN board are a mine of information, they may be able to help answer your questions, the archives might help too. Sorry I can't help with useful information.

HelenEmjay-When AS was first mentioned as a possible diagnosis for my DS, I just did as much research as I could into it. I would suggest Tony Attwoods book Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professional as a very good starting point. (You can get it from Amazon). Also, do searches on Google-there is lots of information on the web. Ask on here if there is anything specific you want to know-there are lots of people who will be happy to help you. The NAS website also has lots of good information.

Thanks Tiggiwinkle! im so glad i have lots of lovely people here to chat with - i think id be sat on my couch balling my head off by now if i didnt have you all! i will try and get my hands on that book - i will go and look on amazon now!

I have taught a few boys with AS now. IMLE, I hadn't been able to guess, but once I knew they were, it was kind of like 'oh yeah, of course'. Generally they have been well functioning, but had some trouble seeing other people's points of view... But with guidance have really settled in mainstream schooling. HTH
